Cross and one in Acton school Choral Society Acton Band delight weekend audiences by Hartley Coles The annual spring con cert of Georgetown Chor Society and Acton Cit Band was billed as a Holiday In Spring but the fortunate who at tended at least one of the three concerts presented by the two groups last weekend came away impressed by the variety and excellence of the pro gram Choral Society con Dale Wood and George Elliott con of the Acton Citizens Band planned the program as a vehicle to bring light music from the British Isles and other favorite places to the people of Halton Hills as if they were a train ride through the isles That they did indeed but for those not with these two outstanding musical organizations was also an eye opener There was a variety of music from England Scotland Ireland and Wales in the first half of the program The second half was devoted to such outstanding selections as the Andante from the vio lin concerto Op by Rich Strauss performed by the band and Haydn triumphant The Heavens are Telling from The Creation performed by band and choir To conclude the pro gram the band and choir performed Handel Hal lc I Chorus one of the most stirring works ever written It brought spring into as a time when the earth rises after the bleakness of winter and especially the Resur of Christ the conclusion of Saturday concert in Ac ton the audience arose with to ap plaud one of the best con certs ever presented There was equal in Georgetown at Holy Cross Church where senior citizens from Hal ton Hills and Milton were entertained Friday night and again Sunday when the concert was open to the public at the same church There was something for everyone in the pro gram from the Irish Suite played by the band the rousing On the Quarter deck by the band dir by veteran mus ician Chuck Wright and a tone poem from the Isle of Man called Mann in Veen Dear Isle of Man with its unique Manx music The audience was also most appreciative of an Ayre and Trumpet Tune from an excellent arrangement by Henry Purcell Talented Paul Bray a clarinetist with the Acton Band and the Oakville Symphony con ducted the band for that work The choral society lit orally had the audience breathless with their ren ditions of such work as Bach Sheep May Safely Graze the Newfoundland song Banks of Loch the singers in O Clap Your Hands work of the first half tor the minded the band and choir play and sang excerpts from The Sound of Music with Dr Elliott on the podium It was Erin on American folk enjoyable and song He Gone Away never too saccharine or and the Welsh The Ash- semi sweet for enjoy grove A double version of The Road to the Isles and the ladies of the choir in I Know Where I in were other favorites But it was the Both band and choir hung onto the baton of Dale Wood as he con ducted the triumphant The Heavens arc Telling Hallelujah chorus and band Chorus They were prcc- provided the high by the choir llghts for the evening When the two practiced together for the first time on the previous Monday conductors Wood and El were apprehensive about the quality of the of Beyond the Mountains a nostalgic work by which showed what the choir could do The audience hung on every note and then rejoiced with the combination Dr Elliott choir as swung into confessed the band had been practicing at a tempo than the choir Welding the two to Hall President Kae Hansen opened the meeting with a reading entitled A Wife Prayer After the secretary and the treasurer reports the business meeting followed Living For Jesus was sung and the club repeated The president welcomed the guests Roll call was answered by presenting a craft item for the sale next October The worship service was then conducted by Georginu Van Fleet and her group the prayer given by Beth Smith The closing hymn was He Me 0 Blessed Thought Refreshments were then served A vocal quartette consisting of Beth Smith Brown Van Fleet and Jane Robertson gave a very nice rendition of Let Christ Shine Throwth Impressed with the band and its improvement since the last time he heard them play There was unanimous agree ment that the choir was tremendous The discouraging part for band and choir was the size of the audience in Acton Saturday night There were only a few more in the seats at the middle school as the musicians and singers Fortunately the next Holy Cross
