aces tennis club by Diana Waltmann You probably been wondering why you I I heard any complaints from the Acton Tennis Club regarding the recreation department proposal to confiscate per cent of the club fees for they say maintenance purposes Especially since their counterparts in Georgetown are plastered all over the front pages of that town s papers The Gordon Alcott Tennis Club was up in arms over the department arbitrary decision and only now has finally accepted the fact after council passed but not a battle And what did Acton Tennis do Nothing They in fact accepted agreed and ceded even almost immediately They re Just a model of diplomacy I don t think any government anywhere has seen such marvellous cooperation The Acton Tennis Club docsn t think so cither They re hoping the town is so overwhelmed with this display of unequivocal cooperation the depart will rush right out and resurface Acton four courts We w II cooperate completely said Club president Peter Marks Th year He said club members agreed with userpay whichiswhat recreation director Tom Shepard Is hoping to install OPEN MIND He said the club executive voted unanimously to approach the an open m and open wallets They even sent a letter to council voicing their approval That letter was used as an example by Halton Hills Council during last week meeting It didn t phase the Georgetown club Ofcourse saldMarks of their fees is twice as much as ours And besides for our fees we will receive a subsidy for a finished face The recreation department was first vying for a per cent takeover but both clubs opposed that arrangement Marks said hey would have a difficult time as it is spend the per cent on maintenance A per cent take could not be justified There ore about members in the local club each year said Marks with ages ranging from eight to 80 The fees for this year ore 35 for family and for a couple That means the town Is getting about 000 from Acton Wave goodbye The lost revenue will mean local club members can wave goodbye to the antic pated shelter have a long term plan said Marks The money would have gone to the shelter and washrooms But we will virtually save nothing now The possib ility of a is remote Marks said right now the town isn t making promises cither although they did say would help the club exe cutive raise funds The lotteries are an idea Marks said but we would still need to raise the other 1 and that s impossible The first priority is to get the courts resurfaced Of course last year we could have had the courts resurfaced free as Georgetown did added Marks Their timing is regretable We re not a private club continues Marks We really are Just a group of organized public wishing to malte max imum use of the courts It t help matters when you remember Georgetown has already had its shelter built They were fortunate to save four or five years for a shelter said Marks We won t be able to save a cent Paying twice Now a cynical person could raise such nifty questions as why should club members pay again for use of public courts when they have already built It from their muncipal taxes Continued
