2 The Acton Fri Press Wednesday 1980 A lifetime of trapping fishing and hunting seamed his nearly 80 year old face and made him a very interesting character He in Acton since the 1930s although he come from far away he was bom on the mountain In Milton In the Dirty Thirties It was hard to make a trig even In Acton and Bill found himself doing anything make a dollar He trapped junked worked in yards Tannery and worked for the town of Acton for years He started working at the age of 10 herd cattle for cents a day For this reason he t get a heck of a lot of education and regrets It now However in those days it was more important to help tits dadout Learning from his father he started to set traps and catch mink fox muskrats skunks and raccoons Coon skins and muskrat a dollar each mink fetched to Recently brought a high of 11 and Bill says he got as high as for Coons arc the big climbers now their skins more Bill has known them to go as high as but that is unusual When he first moved to Acton Scene Street Bill cut roads through rocks for relief money the way we got relief There too many getting money for nothing today Times were tough but we worked he says To supplement the money raised by working at various brick yards from Milton to the Forks of the Credit Bill developed his traplincs from Mof fat to travelling upwards of miles in his old Model T to service the line He and his son Doug who currently lives with him in his Town Line residence would work until at night skinning and stretching the skins Vie got muskrats in one day that took us a time The trapped this route until three years ago when Sill health started to fail him The territory kept growing smaller as develop ment crept from town into the country Now it altogether different most people don like it comments Bill He used to do quite a bit of trout fish ing speckles but the trout creek is a half mile from where Bill lives and his high blood pressure makes him a might worried about walking there lie loves telling stories about the moose hunts he and his sons have been on up north near Chap- He and son Mel have roughly is moose in their time Bill thinks but he says he has trouble with polio In the summer of Bill was working at fruit picking trucking fruit pickers to and from farms for cents apiece and picking in between I was in plums he says when I got this aw ful pain down my arm By evening when I was driving home the pain Jumped to my other arm That night they sent for old Doc Kenney The next morning I was in St Josephs Hospital where they gave me a spinal and trucked me ocr to the General so fast Two days later I was in Hamilton General He was there for five months suffering excruc They said It was good to have the pain some feel nothing and they were done for Bill was one of the fortunate ones only his arms were affected and he regained the use of them although never to full strength He work for 10 years after his bout sure that he could never work regularly again ex of course for the trapping hunting and fish ing However he was asked to work for the town collecting garbage two days a week and he thought he give It a try It pretty near me at first but he ended up working steady for the town for 12 years until mandatory retirement at age I did everything for the town drove truck dug graves It s altogether different today these fellows don work at all compared to us They ve got it easy people don know what work is I didn know what a hour day was til I started working for the town About this time 1958 Bill moved from Scene Street to the country lot on the corner of Fourth Line and Town Line east of Acton where he still makes his home Since then he watched houses being built all over country roads They re building all around some of them build in the places in swamps on sides of hills Since he retired from trapping Bill spends his time gardening trying to remember how many grandchildren he has he has 10 children and feeding the local squirrels and birds Trapping animals never bothered me The only thing I got a big heart for now Is my little squirrels and chipmunks I hate to sec them get killed on the road Student at Robert Little school
