unity Ser vices Centre has come a long way in five years The Community Services Centre began in as a place where people could get infor ma ion about health and social services and as a referral service for various agen cies But under first Judy McLin and the past three years Terry Grubbe it has grown considerably until today it operates Meals on Wheels the Block Parent Program Income tax clinics for sen or supplies space for different agencies operating part time in Acton and hand ing emergencies in the community Mr Grubbe says the Community Services Centre located in the Murray Memorial building on Mill Street East the same building that houses the Acton detachment of the Halton Regional Police and the Hills town office was started by a group of concerned citizens in Ac ton who felt it wa3 too ficult for people here to obtain health and social services Agencies in South Under Halton region as it was under County most health and social services agencies were located in the south There were small offices and some services In Georgetown and Milton but the bulk were in the south part of the region There anything In Acton not even an office where counsellors could see clients Transportation prob lems the distance to services In the south and the fact calls were long distance were keeping people here from obtain ing the help they often needed The Community Services Centre Mrs Grubbe explained was to offer people a local num to call for help where they would find out which agency to contact ight off the bat without having to make a number of calls searching for help Galnded credibility After it became established gaining credibility as agency with residents as a place where people ain personal pro fessional and confidential services it was able to go out in the community and help develop new ser vices as well as take on some more jobs itself As a referral service Acton Community Scrv ices Centre directs res to family counsel ling credit debt counsel ling drug and alcohol abuse counselling where to get family assistance Children Aid Mental Health Team and the health department In the area of infor mation services the helps people apply for old age pensions and provides information about local government local organizations rec reation and pro grams Beyond its original mandate the centre has branched out in a number of areas Meal on Wheels The Community Serv Ices Centre with the help of to 50 volunteers operates Meals on Wheels five days a week This program provides seniors and the disabled with nourishing meals The centre inatcs and operates the Block Parent Program signs in house windows identifying that as a place where children can go for help in an emergency The centre runs income tax clinics for senior citizens and provides for the Hills Legal Clinic seniors health clinics imtnun clinics and office space for health and social agencies so counsellors con meet with clients in Acton Fulfilling other needs The centre is helping fulfill other needs In the community like helping local people establish the Nursery School and acts as a resource source for the nursery school The centre has been involved in the development of Women Place in Milton and cosponsored the seniors workshop in Acton last year One of the most services tre has been providing the past couple of years has been assistance to individuals In Acton The centre helps people find accommodations cloth ing transportation employment and other emergency services Case histories Probably Ihe best way to explain the many ways the Community Services Centre has expanded is to took at some case his tories Case One The centre was asked to find readers for a blind gentleman The high school was contacted and arrange ments were made for two students to visit the blind man twice a week to read mail newspapers and other material to the resident Case Two A probation officer who works with juveniles contacted the centre because a youth who had committed a minor first offence needed to perform a certain number of hours of community service work to fulfill one of the conditions of his pro bation The centre con tacted the Acton Bus iness Improvement Area representatives and they arranged some work for the youth keeping streets clean and gardening for senior citizens Case Three The centre was contacted by an occupational therapist about the difficulties enc ountered by a senior citizen living alone who needed a brace to walk The centre arranged transportation for the senior citizen to a rehabilitation centre arranged for a volunteer to visit the senior and do some light housekeeping and prov Ided meals on wheels vice Case row A man con the centre after his wife suffered a stroke because he needed some assistance on a daily basis to help the woman walk The centre arranged for some vol untcers to visit dally for wo years to help woman walk Five A distraught mother from Erin called about her young son who had suffered an eye injury and was hemorrhaging The father was at work and the centre advised the woman to rush her child to Sick Children sin Toronto The mother came to Acton to catch a bus to the Georgetown GO train but when she got to town discovered at the police station the bus t be leaving for another two hours The police ofice went to the services centre for help The centre located a volunteer to drive the woman Georgetown where she was met by an ambulance which rushed them to Toronto In her haste the mother had left her wallet in the volunteer driver car The father was contacted and the wallet returned to the woman Case Six A request came from the police for the centre to help a teen aged boy become in volved in sports However the boy s fam had little money and afford hockey equipment The centre canvassed local mer chants who donated skates and equipment Case Case Seven A young boy about 10yearsold came to the centre for the legal clinic The boy had bought his mother a Christmas present and asked to leave it at shop until he could pick it up after school When the boy returned to the store after classes he db covered his purchase was no longer there While the store clerk remem the purchase she find the parcel The centre contacted the store discussed the problem and the boy was asked to return to the centre with his father to pursue the matter fur ther Unfortunately the boy never returned Case Eight This is a combination of a number of cases A young mother with two children whose husband has left her or abused her and the children comes to the centre Staff assesses
