recent Adventure In Cltliemhlp trip Ottawa Rotary rep takes oath by Jennifer Julie Pierce a 17 yearold Acton High School student is still glowing from a trip she took in May to Ottawa representing the Acton Rotary Club for Adventure in Citizenship a youth program sponsored by the Ottawa Rotary Club Julie the daughter of Mr and Mrs Bill Pierce of R I Acton in was one of young people from all over the coutnry who went the nation capital She was selected by her leachcrs The trip lasted four days from May 11 to and featured such interesting events as lunches with P C Leader Joe Clark and Leader Ed Julie was very taken with Clark and had her picture taken with him At his luncheon speech Clark said It is really something to be able to talk to a whole nation in one room A trip to the National Museum of Science and Technology bus tours social events and parties kept the young representatives of the nation Rotary Clubs hopping every minute Julie says she learned a great deal on her trip and describes a heated discussion between members from different provinces about who should control our natural resources provincial or federal governments The trip took place before the referendum in Quebec and we found everyone wanted a unified Canada On the final day all the representa lives took the oath of citizenship and were presented with special citizenship certificates The farewell luncheon was a tearful affair says Julie I want to come home In their goodbye speeches many youngsters referred to their new awareness of Canadian nationalism One representative stated the singing of the national anthem now meant so much more to her One representative from Newfoundland commented jokes were made easy so that ma inlanders could understand them In her return address to the Acton Rotary Club last week Julie concluded It really hard to put into words Just what I received from this program but It opened my mind to things I hadnt thought before strongly about a united Canada and never before have I felt so proud to be Canadian I consider myself fortunate to have been able to participate in the Adventure In Citizenship Program your Acton Rotary Club Involvement is helping young Canadians better understand the country It s problems and possible solutions You are helping us to build a better and brighter future for us all combining to offer a sports camp The depart ment s share takes place at the high schools In Ac ton and Georgetown ing July In August the board takes over The program will be offered only In Georgetown that month This program which is more lured than the one in July is called the Ballon Hills Sport and Fitness School Swimming will be a daily feature of the fit ness school A special trip is also planned for each of the three weeks Basnet ball lacrosse volleyball football tennis and squash are among the sports offered The program is under supervision of Acton res ident and Georgetown High School teacher Mike McMahon One program geared to rural residents is the playmoblle The van is designed and equipped to meet the needs of child ren of kindergarten age and older Games crafts and sports are planned as well as special events Trips away
