Conquer It would appear the only way Acton and the rest of Halton is ever going to take actions to solve the regions growing garbage problems is if we are all knee deep in garbage Engineer Robert Austin re cently remarked at council that the town may not have to worry about garbage collection costs and disposal fees for dumping at the last two region landfill sites in south Halton in another year Far too many people chuckled at his comment thinking it was a joke Then theres the disturbing news that Divide and Conquer the towns recycling program is far from a success in its first two months of operation in Acton Only 12 per cent of Acton house holds are participating The works department was aiming for 25 to 27 per cent to reach its goal of tons of Acton paper glass and tin collected each month To make matters worse while our garbage problems and the collection and disposal costs mount interest in the program is waning a bit in Georgetown where it is well estab lished after two years The region which is responsible for garbage disposal is down to two rapidly filling dumps in Burlington and Oakville There arent any in the north which means we are all paying more to get rid of our refuse because of increasing trucking costs The region knows the problem It knows if action isnt taken soon all the dumps will be closed and there will be garbage on more than just our rural roads and a few residential streets Well be knee deep in the wet smelly stuff The regions spent a bundle on studies and not come up with any solutions And why should they buckle down and quit making garbage a political football when the vast majority of residents are either unaware of the problem or dont care Participation in Divide and Con quer takes very little extra time It will reduce not only the volumes filling our dumps mak ing them last longer but will also help reduce our collection and disposal costs because the town is paid for the recyclable materials Frank Morette the town works superintendent reports the town has been approached by a customer willing to buy card board which is used extensively in packaging and accounts for a lot of garbage But whats the use of the town getting into that too It doesnt pay as well as other materials and besides not enough residents are participating in Divide and Conquer now to pull the program out of the red Actonians should accept the challenge and go all out to separate more garbage than their Halton Hills cousins down in Georgetown Lower taxes on new homes This Is my second attempt at writing this letter in reply to your caption should pay more and Mrs Lambert let ter page June i960 Issue My first letter I wrote on June Im mediately after reading the letter It con tained three pages of harsh but true facts in response to Mrs Lamberts letter After reading It myself and letting a few days pass by I realized that my response in a harsh manner was exactly what we are trying not to do That la to put old residents of Acton against new It was also when I realized that perhaps many local people dont understand hat all the fuss Is about I therefore thought I would try and be more constructive In my approach to tell the facts as they are I might add that I am a resident of the area The first and foremost objective we have Is to lower or stabilize the property taxes paid by the residents of the newer homes In Acton The only way that we can see this being accomplished Is for section Be to be implemented I agree with local government that before opting for this plan It should be studied and oil of ihelr answered before a decision Is nude We dont wish to see this time per iod abused though because as you know elections are not all that far away We wouldnt like to see this die In the mean time What Section 80 does Is a total reassessment of the area This would mean that many homes assessments would go up thus raising taxes and some would go down thus lowering taxes This option is the only sure way we can see of lowering our taxes If there Is another way with good a chance of working In our favour without having total reassess Im sure the people in our area would go for It The tax problem we face should be looked at in a variety of aspects Lets dwell on some of these because they dont only concern the newer homes here but should be a concern for all residents of Acton The taxes paid by many people of our subdivision are between per year And there are some who pay more Our concern a our taxes are out of line for the services received b our taxes have almost doubled In the past five years If our tax rate continues to go unchal lenged It Is conceivable that our taxes could double In the next five years mean ing per year 2 One way to offset high taxes In any community in to have a good Industrial base This area concerns us for a number of reasons a we dont have a good In base in Acton we dont seem to be to attract Industry to our town although other areas of Halton are getting fresh Industrial blood we dont seem to be able to keep what little industrial base we have Since we do not have a good Industrial base here most of our residents work out side of town Mil ton Georgetown Brampton Mlsslssauga Guelph etc mak Acton a bedroom community What happens when gas prices go to per gallon Not only will people move out but so will business because between high taxes and high transportation expenses they will move closer to major trans porta t ion lanes or closer to their course of raw material This means trouble for a small community such as ours It very apparent that the town seems to be doing Its job In keeping taxes down having only a per cent yearly average Increase My hat off to you The same cannot be said for the regional government This Is already a sore spot for many local people Need I say more I would now like to address myself to Mrs Lambert letter who I admire for voicing her opinion If I may take some of your comments Mrs Lambert and reply 1 The Items mentioned regarding assessment value re Square footage basements number of bath rooms heating and additional structures In my case my basement is unfinished I have one bathroom I have gas heat no air conditioning I have no additional struct ures and no pool I pay over per year The additional services required for newer developments such as a sewage no doubt the capacity of tho treatment plant was increased but did you know that all the sewers in Bovls were paid for by the builder and thus passed on the price of our homes as were roads sidewalks and lighting new schools you could hardly attribute Ihe new high school to our subdivision or the newer homeowners as most of our children are preschool or lower element ary grades arenas If there hap pened to be a new arena In Acton kindly let me know where so I can book some ice time Perhaps Mrs Lambert was thinking of the Gordon Aleott arena In Georgetown Maintenance of additional roads you may note that all road construction has been in areas other than the new sub divisions of Acton It is true that we get snow removal along with garbage pickup and mall delivery which Is the least wo could expect for our tax dollar Maintenance of parks the only park we have In our subdivision Is a paved drainage ditch which Is Infested with etc I wouldnt expect anyone to play in that no matter what their taxes At any rati I have written all I wish to at this time The residents of my area like Acton the people and the atmosphere and wish to continue to live h re and be active socially All we are asking for is a fair shake Rick Smith New book makes you dig to bottom of garbage can If you re so smart why don you write something intelligent and literary That what a lady said to me after read In that dumb article
