like a change of scenery and when applied for a transfer was lucky enough to come to Robert School by Kelly Frank In the midst of rising unemployment and factory layoffs there are Jobs for people In But these jobs are only for those willing to work on the end of a hoc According to Henry Stanley a spokes man for the Ministry of Agriculture and Food farmers could use a helping hand to harvest this year bumper crops Stanley most are flourishing be cause of the hot wet sum have had and that the Jobs arc there for those who want them The problem Is evid ently no one wants to do physically hard farm work fact farmers have been aware of for a number of years Stanley part of the reluctance to do farm labor is due topeople be ing spoiled with high Job opportunities in and around Halton People have the cream of the crop around here as far as Jobs go he said Because it a high industry area here usually a lot of factory Jobs that pay bet and mean less work But Stanley says farmers pay good wages too However he admits that over the years farmers have been wary of hiring local help be cause they re simply too unreliable The young people the ones who try to do the work just don seem to hold up he said The first day they get out on those fields and work like a ball of fire but the second day they don even bather to show up At first sign of a back ache or sore mus cles they quit Because their help has become so unreliable far mers have over the part ten years planned for their growing season w local help In the picture Stanley many area farmers have re sort to the use of ex pensive machinery to replace manual labour It shame really Here we have able bodied people who won t do the work and farmers paying an arm and a leg to do the work with tricky machinery said Stan ley I- have also be gun hiring help from the West Indies who stay the full season And they don walk off the Job according to Stanley Stanley says It a shame that local labor isn t more readily available because It means farmers have be come reluctant to expand operations Farmers are afraid to grow more in cose they can get enough help to harvest the crops which end up rotting in the fields His concern has sparked the Ministry of Agriculture and Food into assessing the possibility of starting a farm labor training program Ho admits no Immediate plans to im plemcnt a program are set but when they are he the benefits would be great ARC unveils addition At the official opening Friday October visitors will tour larger work and spaces new kitchencafeteria new washrooms and see the updated
