my mind is tying itself in knots As Executive Director of the Common wealth Study Conference held in Canada Lloyd has worked very closely with the Duke of Edinburgh and has visited Royal residences lunching privately with the Royal family Lloyd and his wife Betty are now retired they hope and living on ten acres in Lloyd would like to have some time to work his vineyard but the paper work from the Con ference is still being published and there the National Labor Board of which he a part time member Lloyd is a fascinating man very low key and convinced noone wants to hear about his life in personnel labor relations with companies or of his experience with the Conference The lived in Montreal for years during the s and 60s while Lloyd was em ployed with CIL Prior to this Lloyd a graduate of Western University had spent six years in the Army His business career sent him all around Canada and the States as labor management la is ion manager for a variety of firms Including de Ha Vila nd Aircraft He served on a wide variety of boards and community committees and is reputed to be one of the best labor management arbitrators this country has ever seen The have children and seven grandchildren In the Duke of Edinburgh spear headed the first Commonwealth Conference in England inviting people from all Commonwealth conn tries employed in areas of company manage and trade unions The Conference was started in an attempt successful to bring people from all over the world together to learn fromcachothcr Apparently the Duke was astounded after the famous six month trip he and the Queen took around the Commonwealth in the early SO at how often the same mistakes were repeated in different countries As a result of his position with Lloyd was invited to attend the Conference along with a group of Canadian delegates Later a Conference alumnus he found himself assisting with more Conferences including the second one in 1962 here in Canada 1968 in Australia and in England Each Conference Is a study tour lasting three weeks Orientation lectures and meetings kick off the Conference followed by smaller study groups travelling to communities to talk to community leaders on labor management pro blems During the Conference two trains left University the headquarters of the Con and travelled across Canada detouring for stops until Vancouver was reached After so many years involvement in the Con Lloyd logical choice as Executive Director in 1980 The Governor General Roland Michener acted as Conference Chairman LloydtclIsanamusuigstoryofMr selction as Chairman At an earlier Conference meeting it was sug that Taylor present at the meeting should chair the event He declined and was told by Prince Philip that he d better come up with someone if he Taylor wanted the
