incorporating a leather theme The Chamber is in the midst of its annual membership drive with the goal of signing up 150 individuals and members With the promotion of Acton as leathertown and the possibility of a series of speaker luncheons barely on the drawing board the Chamber is looking for more members to help make these dreams a reality Acton of course has a tremendous leather heritage Over people make their living in leather plants in Acton However 1960 saw the leather industry became part of tho commercial aspects of Acton with the opening of the mall and the Hide House We feel a lot could bo build on the leather theme here Mrs Fleming said It could be a positive image for the town Early this year the Chamber would like to see a committee of its members sit down with other in crested people in the community to look at ways of developing the leather theme further A leather museum signs and a logo are just three possible ideas the leather theme could go off In many directions The whole idea is very much still in the exploratory stage for Instance location of a possible leather museum t been determined The Chamber will also be looking at bringing the leather theme into the edition of Its directory successfully launched last year Mrs Fleming noted a history of leather In Acton and stories about things like tho uniqueness of Beardmore a plant where both upper and sole leather is manufactured could be included in the directory She said many other communities have enhanced their identity by promoting large industry for Instance Glace Bay and mining or Brant ford as telephone town Mrs Fleming said the Chamber would be looking for help with this venture not just from the leather Industry but also groups like the BIA Acton Committee The few people who hove been involved In this idea so far have been very enthusiastic and Mrs Fleming says enthusiasm could go rampant Both the promotion of Acton as leathertown and speakers luncheons Will be topics of discussion at the Chamber Annual General Meeting to be held in February Speakers at the luncheons could include people involved with small business members of Cham in other towns local people involved in various community projects and government officials The membership drive for was launched in October and so for 31 members have been signed up More encouraging is the fact of those members are new members Last year the Chamber had 109 members so this year is a realistic goal The Acton Chamber of Commerce has past years worked on Back to Acton Days and sponsored the Citizen of the Year program Work has already started on marrying Back to Acton Days and Oil Citizen of the program so even more people in the community participate For several years the Chamber published a map and directory brochure but last with the help of Acton High School students published a page detailed directory booklet The Chamber does lias on work new businesses in town and sponsors dotes meetings at election
