Runners wanted Only those with plenty of sole need apply No I not talking about the shoes but those wearing them to help Gordon A ty form Acton first running club Auty has been running for three years and has built up to a marathon level But he says he looking for anyone at any stage to join his club He posted notices In several stores his telephone number in case anyone wished to join but so far has only two calls While running I noticed several other people out so I thought maybe we could get some together His plan is to meet on a Saturday or Sun day morning and go out on a fun run for a couple of miles is already doing this with the Guclph a running club that gets to gether once a month on Tuesday ana some times Sunday Each month they run a different program D stance he odds has nothing to do with it is a bit of on expert on distance He said he started running three years ago to lose weight He weighed pounds when he started I got hooked he explains I got In crested in running my weight went down and my times got better Right now at pounds as he builds for the Ottawa May Auty says he is running miles over seven days a week to prepare for the mile run It will be his second marathon His first was the last October He weighed all of 120 pounds and finished the run in three hours and four minutes He s also ran the Burlington the half marathon in Peterborough a winter run in Sudbury and the eight mile run in Waterloo He for the Boston Marathon and sent in on application but decided to go to Ottawa instead The distance is the same the fame isn t however After Ottawa says he hopes to compete in Sudbury on July and either the or the Detroit Free Press marathon in October It a gruelling pace for anyone but 47 yearold says he likes it and adds his family supportive You have to have an understanding wife and family says My family has become part of the marathon They travel to the races with me Docs that make running a little less lonely I guess running is lonely but It is also a very private thing You have to condition yourself On a twenty mile run by myself I see a lot going on in the fields but must con centrate must think A group can t concentrate Maybe that the problem con about the slow response to his ad vert Running is a private thing Auty stressed the fact distance is unimportant as Is ability for membership in the proposed club I not trying to press anyone with my distances I just think would be nice to get people out He added he was also hoping to attract all ages to the club so he could perhaps coach three or four younger runners who show promise says he already talked to two with whom he can run but added someone may hesitate because they up to his level Someone may not even want to attempt to reach his level But there no reason Bays Auty why they can t start out together when one Is finished his or her will Just keep on running Contact him at Annual merger rumor laid to rest Sabres planning general meeting If the Georgetown Gemini want to discuss a merger with the Acton Sabres the Club executive is willing to listen says president Frank But that about all The annual Gem Sabre merger rumor resurfaced again several weeks ago at the Gemini general meeting and in Georgetown newspaper reports But says Allsop no one has contacted him from the Georgetown organization since He added the executive discussed the latest rumors at their last meeting and decided they would listen to any suggestions but won comment one way or the other until the Gems contact them Meanwhile the Sabre executive will be wrapping up their most successful season ever and preparing for a new one at their PeelHalton meet annual meeting tentatively planned for early next montl Allsop says Jules Russian who coached the Sabres to a fifth place finish this season has indicated he like to return as did gen era manager Rob Jeffries The team won be intact however as the Sabres lose several g gura to overage including team captain Pat Fung But says with the new success of the Sabres and the fans should draw a lot more Acton players to try out for the team A lot of players could have mode 11 team last year if they had tried said Allsop But they probably thought it would be the same old Sabres in last place I guess we shocked and surprised them at the same time the executive feels has been a fantastic year and no wonder A sharp increase in attendance and gate rec from the playoffs has given the Club a more solid financial base The annual general meeting open to the public Is tentatively scheduled for May Youre invited AHS double
