It s volunteer week The Acton Free Press Wodnesday Apr Tribute to just five of Actons volunteers Volunteer centre set for Acton A volunteer centre Is being established in Acton The need for a Volunteer Centre in North Halton has been outlined In three studies In which local service agency staff community volunteers and the general public were questioned The large majority of those questioned Indicated a need for a Volunteer Centre The results of these studies promoted the recently formed North Halton Social Planning Council to strike a steering com mlttee of six people to work towards establish a Volunteer Centre In North he steering com first met on March and in the short time since the committee has succeeded in out lining the alms and ob jectives of the volunteer centre securing part time shared spaced in Acton Georgetown and Milton and helped to promote an all Canada Volunteer Week April in The North Members of the com have attended conferences on vol in and Peel establishing useful contacts and obtaining necessary information on funding publicity and the step by step operation of a volunteer centre The aims and ob jectives of the North Hoi ton Volunteer Centre in dude promoting vol recruiting vol and placing them in appropriate volunteer agencies up to date records on com needs for vol tin leers and community resources The committee decided that one central phone number should be avail able for all residents of North Halton to use to contact the Volunteer Centre but that the centre must have space In Acton Georgetown and Milton where Inter viewing of Interested vol unteers and meetings with local agency staff could take place Part time space and the use of a phone has been promised by the Acton Community Ser- Centre The steering com mittcc is currently working out budget proposals seeking alter native funding sources and volunteer staff and taking all the necessary steps towards estab lishing the Vol un leer Centre as a working real Anyone interested in helping to work towards this goal Is asked to call the Acton Community Service Centra This week Is Volunteer Week In North Halton April to May set aside as a week of appre the North Halton teer centre She also knits for the Mennonite Central Committee World Relief Sale held in May in New Hamburg and the Save he Children Craft Sale in Toronto A Block Parent she is also active in school work and every Wednesday drives for the Meals on Wheels program The First Brownies while all resi dents of Erin Township are active in Acton volunteer work Age six fighters Hla sports involvement includes minor hockey coaching and managing aa two years of executive work has also coached minor ball and was the founding president of the Acton Industrial Hockey League A volunteer
