wins Leader proud of scouts at CJ It was an eventful but tiring eleven days for seven Acton scouts and their leader but Ihe Canadian Jamboree was an experience of a lifetime Under the leadership of Rick Gibson scouts Peter Kuechler Don McDonald Jason Sharpies David Tim Height Ted Moyse and Ken left July for the jamboree situated on a site halfway between Calgary and Banff Alberta Rick explains the area is largely unpopulated and organizers Scouts of Canada had a lot of work to do to get ready for the expected visitors Irrigation pipes had to be laid for the various troops to provide water as well as showers etc needed lo be Installed Seventeen bears had to be relocated and then three were shot In the nearby area while the Jamboree was derway One section of a camp had lo be evacuated because a mother and her cubs wandered Into camp Scouts from were this group Organized camps and even organized free lime assured that each boy had something to do at all times In their spare time there were target shoots golfing baseball soccer archery leather kits etc Each program was laid out for each troop and included a skills hike a tour of Banff a rodeo and Klondike games Indian village games and a day trip to the Calgary Stampede While at tl e Stampede each scout was given an unlimited pass for the rides Opening saw Scouts Canada president Waller B Til den and Lord Baden Powell the founder grandson on hand Also present were Peter Trynchy Ministry of Recreation and Parks for Alberta Edward Governor Gencrul of Canada and Honorary Chief Scout of Canada While most of the were Canadians Rick noted here were representatives from 14 other countries at Jamboree During opening ceremonies flags from Sweden Israel Britain USA and Australia among many other countries were exchanged Every nice in Canada was represented Rick said for most part considering the number of people at the site the jamboree was very well organized Because of the dangers of bears Individual troops were not allowed lo keep food near their tents so for each meal scouts had to stand in long line to buy the r food lo make each meal Because of the organization of time the boys always had something to do Rick said until the last day Their flight did not leave until early morning on July and they had to sit around the entire day of the when most of the troops were heading home July 11 they were busy breaking camp but then headed to the airport in the early evening and had a six hour wait before heading home Rick said the last two days were the longest of the entire trip The leader was really impressed with his troop and their behaviour while away They are a very responsible bunch of kids he said Rick has been a scout leader for three and a Beaver leader for two years before
