Tho Acton Free Press Wednesday Sept 1981 Profiles with Jennifer For a dozen years our of animals was kept healthy by BcnWingrove Dr Ben to the kids and Gentle Ben to the animals Farmers buck tothelandcrs and those of us who can t live with out a houseful of looked upon Ben as a friendly old timt vet who would doctor anything stay for coffee and tally leave a small bill Ben Wingrove retired last week selling his Os practice to Dr Mill Wain of Terra Cotta to be operated by He 11 be assisted by Carol Graham a familiar face to Win grove patients However other familiar faces at the clinic Bob and receptionist Jean Whiting are gone Ben and his nursewife Mabel will still be llv on their BO acre farm just west of Osprlnge working Hertford beef cattle always Ben may have more for flying his Piper Pacer conveniently Stored behind the bam or for playing his organ and fishing For the past years of practice Ben has had precious little time for hobbles although he s kept active with the Royal Shriners of Guelph where he has been president and has served an the executive for many years He s also past master of Royal City Lodge of Perfection Being a farm vet with a mixed clientele covering many miles from Erin to Acton to Hi lis burgh has given Ben plenty of sleepless nights He didn always want to be a vet At one time Ben wanted to be a physicist but it meant trav oiling away from his Aberfoyle home to and funds were scarce So Ben stayed close to home and went to OVC at Guelph follow in the footsteps of great grandfather a Scottish blacksmith who settled in to do a little horse shoeing and doctoring Ben grandfather was the butcher of work ing the slaughterhouse that is now a popular restaurant His father was a farmer In IMS Ben and his Erin bride Mabel set up practice in Erin purchasing a house with no amenities whatsoever Another house avail able with all conveniences sold for but was just too expensive for a struggling vet In those days Ben looked so young he had to grow a mustache His patients consisted of mix ed farm animals A good practice was built nee ess Staling a clinic be added onto the house by 1953 However In those days of the early there was not a lot of money around says Ben and he got of trying to collect old bibs A move to Toronto took him to Canada Packers in Islington then to the purchase of the Street animal hospital Life with small animals was Interesting enough at first Ben says but he t like being indoors Fortunately life was enlivened by mix ing the zoo animals with everyday cats and dogs Adventures with orangutans bent on Infanticide and llamas insisting on being bom like a pretzel added to Ben experience A large bird monkey and chinchilla practice flourished out of the email animal clinic and Ben found himself tackling chinchilla Baby chinchillas are miserable little devils grins Ben At two minutes of age they can sink their teeth right through your finger Missing the farm Ben and Mabel came home in IOCS purchasing the farm on Highway and settling down to a quiet farming life with a little vet work on the side It didn t work out that way and eventually Ben built his clinic on part or the farm Working with farm animals weighing upwards to a ton has left Ben with some scars He re members trying to worm one ungrateful horse who reared upon his hind legs and bashed Ben in the skull with a shod hoof With blood pouring down his face Ben conceded defeat I just bother to worm it he says ruefully Another horse story involves a Presbyterian student minister who spent the summer trav around with Ben While castrating a four yearold work horse Ben put the minister to work holding up the horse tail over a beam a popular method of restraining a horse during gelding In earlier days This time the horse sat down after first in swinging little minister off his feet that the one time heard a preacher swear Life may look sweeter to Ben now that he t have to answer the phone in the wee hours of the morning but veterinarian Ben will be sorely missed However flyer farmer curler and Shriner Ben wilt still be around Dr Ben his wife Matwt the horsedoc lor Ing bag belonging to his great grandfather
