just a branch of the Georgetown body Raising the flag signalling the start or an April campaign Is first pi of the new unit A rile White along with Susan Sale and Yvonne Courline The Acton Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society was born last night Tuesday at a special Charter Presentation meeting at the Trinity United Church Concerned it liens have been working hard for years both as Individuals and later as a branch of the Georgetown Unit Becoming an Independent unit reflects their strength and growth over the years and what the executive feels is a natural step forward Gloria Coals past president of branch decided now was a good time to recall the history of the org an lint ion and give credit where credit is due Following Is the clubs history as remembered by Mrs Coats found big member Vclma West and through of tic la records by Gloria Coats There was a need In our town years ago for dressings and transportation to treatment centers for cancer patients and that need was met by a few volunteers who cared That was the beginning of Iho Acton Branch of the Cancer Society Several years ago we asked a founding member Mrs Velma West to write a his of our Branch The following are some excerpts from her writings plus what I know of our own history all began when Mrs Kay Thompson from Milton a part lime secretary for Hal ton County Health Unit was asked by the nurses of the Health Unit to help make some dressings in their building In the evenings for the patients in need of dres sings It coon became apparent that Acton Georgetown and surrounding areas also such dressing A room was secured in the Milton town hall and vol unteers from Acton Milton Georgetown and Esquesing gathered to make dressings Soon was so great in our town that a room in the Acton Free Press build ing was granted to us free and Lldkea recruited many volunteers from Ac ton and area and dressings started to be made for our own local cancer patients Over that summer years ago due to a shortage of Public Health nurses Vclma West an RN on the unit staff was asked by her director of nursing to visit patients in the Acton area She found first transportation committee already in ac Ted Tyler Sr of Tyler Transport Ltd had been taking needy patients to Toronto for treatment leaving them for the day and bringing them home on the return truck rip Velma then wrote to the Canadian Cancer Society Toronto for help and thus a very Interested but informal group gathered at Aclon Branch was born There are no records to prove this but we feel this happened in fall of Many different activities were
