Guelph Acton Poet Office Is gearing up or a doubling of mail volume In the next few weeks as the Christmas rush gets closer Rob Davis Acton postmaster told the Free Press the week of December Is the beginning of their busiest time of year and by the week of December they see per cent increase In mail handled in the local office By the second half of the next week the volume is trickling out Davis explained that some people are predicting this will be a busier than normal Christmas as people will be rushing to get their regular mall out early to beat the higher postal costs in the new year In order to meet the demand in the next few weeks inside workers will be working overtime to gel the let ters cards and parcela processed Part time staff will also be working extra hours there will be an ex tra mail pick up at letter boxes around town In the meantime the postmaster noted the general public can help substantially In moving the mall through quicker Overseas mall be processed by December if going by air Any surface mail should have been pooled by November 7 to Christmas delivery Out of town mall for Canada and the United States has a December 14 deadline and local mall should be posted by December 17 Davis asks that mall be dropped off In letter early in thr day so mail can get of town lhat same day He also asks that cards and let be bundled with elastic bands when dropped in the boxes He ex plained 11 is easier and faster to pro cess these items Elastics are avail able at the post office Postal codes are also very to help in the efficient delivery of the mail Books contain ing every postal code in Canada are available at the post office for the general public to go through Cards staying in Canada and the United States should be sealed Davis pointed out However any go ing overseas cards should not be sealed Cost of mailing a Christmas card Is cents this year the last year to take advantage of this bargain Davis said referring to the 100 per cent increase In stamps In the new year Doing what he does best Mario Venditti who has spent the past years planning for the Town of Hills is planning again This time however he planning a move which will lake him west to the City of Mario will leave the Town planning department and his post as planning dir cctor December and will begin December 14 as the Director of Planning and Development heading a staff of in Guelph Start in at the ground level of government Mario started the first planning department when he came to the former Town of Georgetown in March Before this time the town relied on consultants to complete planning studies Soon after starting In Georgetown the changeover to Regional government be gan and Venditti worked on the res rue luring of Acton Georgetown Esqucsing and a small northern portion of which became Hie present Town of Hills Before coming to Georgetown Mario worked a small development com pany In Toronto He Is a graduate of York University Planning School while in Georgetown completed work on his Masters Although Mario feels all work the planning department deals with is very important he says one of his pet projects was the downtown redevelopment study which is now in the final steps During his earlier days in Town he worked on tht creation of the Business Improvements Areas for both Acton and Georgetown and with the Chamber of Commerce Other highlights for Mario Included the Highway corridor study which he feels will benefit him in where they arc battling a similar problem he official plan which he worked to consolidate into a new Hills plan boundary studies which should be complete by the end of the year and his work on the task force to oversee Regional Economic for he four area municipalities This involvement In Regional matters Is also helpful since Halton Hills works closely with the larger Regional planning staff Other agencies such as the Niagara Escarpment Commission and the Credit Valley Conservation Authority also closely with the planning department Responsible to the political clement and the ratepayers the planning department has often been the subject of anger and frustration for others We re not the most popular department In town but we have a responsibility to both politicians and ratepayers Mario said Mario praised he town for encouraging good planning adding he hopes the high standard will continue Insomo municipalities they are allowing 40 or even foot lots and often I feel he quality of housing suffers Mario said During his lime In Halton Hills Mario has worked with three mayors Including the last Georgetown mayor Bill Smith and Hills mayors Tom Hill and Peter All of hem worked with the planning staff which now numbers five Mayor Peter Pomeroy Is a progressive thinker and I feel he has done a lot for the community I think he Is steering the com tn the right direction I hope things will continue on the right track which is making this a belter place to live Mario Looking forward to his position In where he will ploy more of an role with a larger staff Mario says Hills has helped him a great deal in preparing for this advance- He and his wife Jacqueline and two children will continue to live In George town The mayor and councillors of Hills paid tribute to Venditti and his work for Hills at last Tuesday meeting of council Councillor Mike Armstrong recalled when Mario came to Georgetown as secretary of the old Georgetown planning board and said his help was invaluable over he years He predicted a difficult time replacing the planning director People of Mario ability are easy to come by he said Both Councillors Marilyn Serjeanlson and Para Sheldon recalled the help they received as rookies on council from Mario Sheldon said Venditti was always there to help on the Official Plan task force Councillor Ross Knechtc concurred with all the compliments and said Venditti had his sympathy in the attempt to ex Hills official plan He suggested council send him on auto
