The Acton Press Wednesday Dec 1981 Just no room for crystal balls in Jr Redmen mentors baskets Murray eels his Aetoi High School junior basketball club will be competitive this year The coach can hardly be called an op timist Last weekend his boys dropped a close 6865 decision to Trafalgar in over time In the finals of a tournament in Brampton This year wo re going to be competitive in the league We have a good complement of Juniors back from lost year and some midgets hove moved up who have some potential said coach Wo have a good mix of second year juniors and new midgets The coach feels he has good reason not to expect the world from his club however Perdue and Park are strong they vebcenstrongforanumberofycars I hope our club will be competitive with those two as welt as the rest of league said Kittmer hs sports The coach feels he has several solid performers on his squad Bob Little and George Goodman are two strong players Paul Nolan Terry Clafranl Scott Allonby and Cliff Nibbs ere all good ball handlers he said The club t doing too badly in the height department cither There Sasquatches on the club but the team stands about average in the league one player standing We have a full of height it snot going to hurt us said Kittmer Nlbbs stands just over the five foot mark but the coach feels his ball handling abll tics overcome any lack of size Not same Dave Boycott as fortunate with his senior squad The coach feels this season and even next are going to be hard on his club as they will be In a rebuilding process We only have Iwo players back from last year club A couple of juniors have moved up Well only be keeping three playersnextycar said Boycott A couple of players have skipped grades and a couple are In four year courses and will be graduating The next year through well have the juniors who have moved up for two years Wo 11 get through this year and next year The coach even been able to get a good look at his players We have three games this week that will let me know how they II do We played In one tournament and have had an exhibition game but have had no victories 1 hope we be able to work things around we still adjusting he said The team has some strengths but has its share of weakness too We re missing one or two players we have a solid front three We re still one or two players short but we re still recruit ing he said The coach lsn worried about his club size however We have the big men where we need them the front three ore about said The basketball clubs have a heavy week of play The seniors met Burlington Central last night after press time the midgets and juniors played Milton Thursday is a tripleheader with at home against Georgetown Rebels sports and recreation Spearing Acton Sabres Roy Spears tangles with a Milton than hapless Milton winning a decision last Saturday night player in Sabres goal while Chris Martin concentrates on the play Sabres w Coach Russiani sees no humour in loss of respect He a hip This Acton Sabres player went for a loop after being checked by bis Milton Flyer opponent hi Saturday night Photos by Dave Darken Rodney Dangerfield Is a success because he doesn t get any respect Actons Central Ontario contingent lsn getting any respect either but Sabres getting laughs or success Their uninspiring 11 record and sporadic bursts of solid hockey haven t been causing any chuckles from coach Jules either Last year the Sabres finally gained some credibility as a top notch hockey club with their game win streak and exemplary performance In the quarter finals aglainst Burlington Cougars All this Is in tho past even Sabres long sought credibility Wo ve lost some respec credibility ihats one thing I won stand for fumed the coach Sabres sporadic play was exempli by their three matches last week Friday night Sabres surprised Oak Blades the still undefeated league leaders as they kept close In a loss Saturday the Swordsmen played what coach described as a soso game The club was Inconsistent but still skated away with an comeback win Monday night Acton was humbled by a 12 7 loss to fourth spot Richmond Hill Dynes Blades had Sabres scoreless after the first period They put one more goal on the board before Sabre cap tain Dave McGilloway found the opening In the second frame Dennis split the pipes in third to close the gap but Sabres t even things up Saturday Chris Martin faced shots and turned back all but six In Sabres win over Milton Sabres started off hot this time jumping to a lead in the first stanza In the second they traded goals and then Milton scored an unanswered tally to move closer Sabres went to the dressing room with a lead handed goal to even things up five minutes Into the last period Actonrepliedwithaahort handed tally of their own minutes later With less than two minutes remaining Milton again set things even Sabres came back with 11 left move ahead and fired an insurance marker into the empty Milton net with seconds left in the game McGilloway scored three goals for Sabres Mark Duval Wade Vickery Tony Gary Williams and Paul Stark scored singles McGilloway also added three assists According lo the coach it was tougher to prepare for their game Milton than for the one against Milton t have anything lo concentrate on they don nave any type of play he said When Sabres don t feel they have to follow their game plan they usually don It been when they meet up with teams like they finally play a thinking type of hockey This been true in their less illustrious games such as Monday a loss to Rlctimond Ml Its stupidity they re Just not thinking said coach I really don know what to do with ihem exhausted everything I know all that a left is to put on skates myself and show them how It a done It seems forever you hove to keep yelling at them and getting mad at them This right you have to make threats It a something m not thrilled about It difficult said They say misery loves company but even though two or three other clubs are suffering same problems it t made Sabres mentor any happier still has one trick left up his sleeve to airlift a couple or three new players to the club If I can get a couple of the players I ve been looking at there will definitely be some changes said the coach One change not too far down the road Is the reinstatement of Rob Vermuelen lo the Jr ranks Last year Vermuelen was drafted by Oshawa Generals of the OHA A leauge buthlsplaywasn tuptoparin the early season so sent him down to Juveniles to regain confidence I veseen an Improvement in him said He s starting to come Booby Ailsop veteran defenceman has been out the last couple of games too Doctors say tho young has a tear in his knee ligaments and want him lo rest it for a couple of weeks If It heal properly then he might require an operation Sabres next game la Friday when they host Thornhlll p at Acton Community Centre Acton Bob Little gives a mean grim mace as
