ball handler he works hard and plays good defensively said Boycott The coach also has an import on roster Tiong Keat Ong a student from Malaysia Although the player Is a year too old for playing senior ball he has been playing In some of the exhibition games and will be helping out Boycott as an assistant coach JUNIORS Acton Junior club looks like it a setting up well in its effort to capture title In the Junior Basketball Tournament for a second year in a row The junior won all three of their games beating Bishop MacDonnell Milton and Georgetown The Junior squad like the seniors relying on a largo base of scorers in the double digits In the romp over Bishop Mac Bob and Mike Smith wen the scoring department Against Milton guard Scott and George were hottest around tho key Dave Leslie and Guard Paul Nolan proved to be top shooters on tho win over Georgetown We have quite a good combination no one stood out as a top scorer but four were in the double numbers with 10 point That is what you need for a good team If you only have one op scorer he Just be double teamed It great when a team is well balanced All this balance will come in handy Satur day In annual tourney Acton will face some tough competition against Lester B Pearson M Robinson Stayner Cardinal Leger Purdue Georgetown and J Ross schools Acton plays Pearson at a Saturday in the first game of tho tourney MIDGETS Being midgets doesn t mean your pro blems are any smaller If anything coaches Blair and Larry are facing more problems with their midgets than the two older teams have combined The seniors and juniors all pick up ex players from the league below them Lyttle and Merrin facing a rebuilding year with some good but Inexperienced talent I don t know how competitive they II be but if we just prepare them for junior then well be doing something sold coach Lyttle We re just rebuilding this year There are some bright and promising spots on the team said the coach We have sensational guard in Pete everything will bo revolving around him Ken Is a good athlete he really impressed me with his running and Jumping we have to work on his skills he said sports and recreation Issue 22 ACTON ONTARIO WEDNESDAY DECEMBER9 1981 Second Section One hundred and seventh y em Issue 22 ACTON ONTARIO WEDNESDAY DECEMBERS Russian is at a loss and so are his Sabres There a first lime for everything For the past six winters since Acton Sabres in troduction into the Jr loop ill Thunder birds have been under the roof of the Com unity Centre This season the only winning streak hapless Sabres have been able to keep unless a twogamer counts was this one Friday night Sabres trade mark of sporadic play ended even this streak as T Birds beat Acton It the same old story there s not enough when we need it explained Russian Sabres are also lacking solid net minding when they need it In the first period keeper Lcs Williams was colder than the ice ho was playing on He faced shots and allowed five goals In the second frame Williams stopped eight of the ten pucks fired his way The third period was the same result as the goalie blocked three of the six shots aimed his way Coach Russian feci the blame should rest on the ex Brampton Jr A tender but on his bum knee and some bum defence Mainly his knee just wasn functioning the way It should but once he loosened up he play too badly The defence Is allowing good quality shots too without any interference they re hard to stop With the small size of the arena once you step over the blue line you re not far from the net said the coach Birds Jumped to a 5 i lead by the end of the first frame By the end of the next period Sabres were down By the final stanza Acton finally decided to play hockey opening the scoring Just seconds into the third put another in the mark Birds came back with a pair and Sabres ended the scoring with a short handed tally Paul Stark had two of Sabres goals and an assist Don Gaudrejult and Dave McGilloway goal each Dennis Charbonneau Ken and Tony had two assists each and had one Russian is beginning a policy of benching anyone who he feels t playing smart hockey I don know what else to do I exhausted everything I know only other alternative is to bench people even if I have to go with only two lines said Russian Thursday three players including goal scorers Gary Williams and Don Gaudreault will be sitting in the stands when Sabres face Dixie Beehives Tie coach said the three will have even more company if the rest of the club continues its poor showing and lack of to follow the game plan brought back Rob Vermeulcn from the juveniles and is playing him with youthful Gord and Denis Kirton as a semi kid 1 In practice Monday night the threesome impressed the coach to the extent he giving them next two games to prove themselves under the gun feels the line could be promising If they play to the r capabilities Another hopeful is on IB yearold left winger who has spent two seasons in the Tier II A ranks feels the boy could be a addition to Sabres roster The boy has quit hockey this but pract with Sabres Monday and should be out next week as well d the boy wants to play for Sabres but Isn I sure if he wants to spend another winter playing hockey If these shakeups don t start work then Ac ton Sabres will be getting out the golf clubs while there s still on the ground It s going to be early retirement this year the way these boys have been playing said the coach The coach might not be over joyed to finish this season In mid February but then he ing too much last night cither Between his team and the men in the zebra stripes was fuming The refereelng was outrageous the worst we had all year said Since the Jr league is lowest on the three junior loops they have to get the leftover refs after the Major and Provincial A leagues take their feels there are only a couple of good men weiring those sir pes working In Acton last Friday As a result the coach had to suffer through a number of bod calls including a Sabres goal the ref and a yearold goal judge even notice When sent his captain McGilloway out to protest the ref to penalize h for be unsportsmanlike the coach became vocal said the only recourse he has is to com plain to the league but that is 1 into the wind Sabres have a chance to break their two game los streak Thursday n when they travel to Dixie to play Beehives day the
