arenas or daytime if a dispute between the Recreation Department and the Separate School Board is not ironed out While discussions between the recreation department and Separate School Board have been going on behind the scenes for some time a letter sent home to parents by Sac re Coeur Principal Serre Monday said skating would be cancelled until further notice At Monday night council meeting Mayor Pete said there seemed to some misunderstanding and asked Recreation Director Tom Shepard to explain said the Town has a reciprocal agree ment with the public school board which shares costs of playing fields gyms and custodial staff arenas and pools We pay what we use of theirs and they pay what they use of ours he commented He pointed out no such agreement exists with the separate school board He said it was brought to his attention the separate schools in Town were using the arena He said the recreation budget did not cover their use of the facilities He put the cost of ice time used by the separate schools at He said his budget could not carry the load forever He said the children are still using the arena during school hours Shepard said the letter was not sent out by the Halton Separate School Board The recreation direc tor said he would try to work something out with Board We have never had the use of the separate schools and right now we don need them He said he had a meeting with Halton Separate School Board lined up Irene Acton represen tatlve on the Separate School Board told council Catholic schools have always allowed the use of their facilities and the uses them and out she runs a league which used a Catholic school for the past three years Our playing fields and baseball diamonds and school yards are available McCauley said there had never been an agreement between the Town and the Separate School Board and the children had always gone skating in the daytime wiU no ad mission She said in the same tic exists She said she understood there is an agreement with Burl School Trustee Mc Cauley said In the letter from the recreation director to the Separate School Board he stated the recreation department has been ab sorbing the cost of the skating and set a figure of for 1981 said the let also claimed since the recreation depart is experiencing restraints and cutbacks it could not continue to absorb the costs The letter further pointed out according to Mc Cauley that there is no demand at present for the separate school facilities but if there is in future an agreement similar to the one with the public school board would be enacted covered by chemical Two men checking Ore extinguisher equipment at the Legion Thursday accidentally set off a sprinklerlike system in the ceiling which covered the kitchen stoves with a fire quelcmng chemical President Jim Hlgglni explained two men arrived at Branch and were allowed In by the cleaning lady He said the men had no Identification and their truck t have a name on it but they said they were from the firm which regularly checks the fire extinguishers The cleaning lady became sus picious and called Hlgglni and be went to the Legion First he called fire chief Hick Holmes to ask if someone Biggins called the Halton Regional Police and they arrived quickly on the scene but the men bad left for a spare part Police suspected tbey might be there casing the Legion for a future break In Police returned with Holmes later to Interview the men after tbey had returned In discussing the matter with treasurer Gord said his associate figured they must be the men from the firm which main
