contacted and Coun cillor Dave Whiting reported snow wasnt removed because long range weather forecasts called for a lot of snow this past weekend The works staff felt it would be more economical to remove the snow after two weekends of storms Councillor Ross Knechlel observed he didnt see Engineer Austin at dropin Jan 29 Have a question about snow plowing road recon struction street lighting sidewalk construction dit ches and drainage or any other municipal works matter If so the place to be January will be the ward one councillors drop- in Actons councillors have arranged to have problems downtown last week and added crews must be paid overtime to remove snow alter stores are dosed Nielsen countered old Acton crews removed snow downtown after p and Hills could do the same Job at 8 a m to avoid overtime charges He added most merchants are conscientious about shovelling sidewalks in front of their stores and cant put the snow in their pockets People were reluctant to park downtown last week Nielsen said and the snow in the gutters also narrowed the travelled portion of streets Snow plows had to stop to let cars in the other lane through because the street was so narrow Only once this winter has the snow downtown been removed loaded and trucked away on December Whiting noted town staff will be framing a winter maintenance policy and public concerns can be raised at council when the policy statement Is com pleted Karen Spears told the councillors downtown was in atrocious condition and she was afraid to park because shed become stuck Downtown Georgetown was in excellent cond ition compared to Acton She added downtown Georgetown was as cleanasaldtten However a call to a business In down town George town confirmed there was still snow In Ihe gutters and piled to go back to the old way of plowing and removing snow from culdesacs and streets with boulevard medians failed Monday night at Halton Hills council Residents hove been complaining because snow isnt plowed to the middle of culdesacs and then trucked away or plowed onto medians this year pointed to Acton Boulevard as a real problem spot He described It as a twoway traffic street which dead ends against a fence and every time its plowed three people cant get out their driveways they are so socked in Previously snow was cleared away with a front end loader but now it is Just left there He blasted staff for making changes without in forming council first and claimed the municipality had fallen down badly on public relations for the changes He said changes were necessary so trucks are following the Highway Traffic and driving on the right side of the road but added he hasnt ob tained a legal opinion on the matter from the town solicitor said town maintenance vehicles could bend the law to get the Job done properly Several councillors felt there was no real problem that residents on streets where changes In opera tions were made were now Just having to dig out the ends of their were some streets were fine others were impassable in towns all over the ince Roy said Letter carriers who were sent home would have been paid Tor the day Roy said Acting Acton Postmaster Chris McMillan said she consulted with Georgetown Postmaster Gil King about the weather and he had talked to the Post Office They all agreed not to send out the car riers for residential delivery She noted carriers go out earlier in Georgetown around Sam while in Acton they go out around 8 Conditions in Acton improved after a but by then sorting had been completed and carriers had delivered mail to businesses same driving to their stops and they had then gone home Rural routes went out and Pat who runs the Post Offices combined urban service delivered packages Mrs McMillan suggested she possibly shouldnt have placed her faith In weather reports which turn ed out to be exaggerated as far as local conditions were concerned King pointed out mail was very light in both Acton and Georgetown because nothing was coming in from the routes north of the area because of the road conditions He observed went without mail for three days Fergus and areas around Guelph didnt receive residential mall on January because of the weather and It was the same story all over Ontario There was mail delivery in Milton where the storm wasnt nearly as bad King noted He said the three Postmasters agreed the carriers wouldnt go out because with the wind chill it was dangerously cold to be outside for up to three hours PinbalL Continued from Page 1 the area have objected and rejected the Idea of only
