WEDNESDAY MAY 1982 PagesThirty Cents Possible water use restrictions If is a dry summer there be restrictions on lawn watering car washing and use water cooled in Acton Last the region s planning and public works Lommittce approved water use restrictions pro posed by the Directorof Public Works Bob Moore in the event maximum day demand exceeds he com pumping capacity at the wells and where the shortfall cannot be met by balancing the reservoir Thi committee also approved a number of public notice procedures should restrictions be needed Moore report Identified lawn watering air conditioning washing as the usual causes of high summer water demand noting lawn water is he biggest single factor Should the region operational data show thai day demand can t be met and action is required the step would be to restrict lawn watering to homes with odd and even numbers on alternate days step one t curb demand then a total res tnction on lawn watering would be imposed If for ther restrictions are required even car washing and air conditioning cooling Tor machines which use water would be prohibited Moore reported staff is optimistic these meas won I be needed but feels they should be place In the event reservoir balancing docsn t contain the problem This month and next notices dealing with the pot problem and advising restraint In use of water will be given in utility bills and newspaper ads In addition Moore will be at the ward one councillors dropin on Moy toanswer the publics questions about the problem and explain matters fully If restrictions are Imposed notice will be given in the FreePress and over radio In this report Moore observes the Prospect Park well was shut down last October after a one week run because It was producing yellow brown water which upset many residents This well was to have produced badly needed extra pumping capacity here to meet maximum demands Currently Acton wells produce 136 cubic metres of water a day while peak demand which normally lasts only a few days is cubic metres a day leaving a shortfall of 1 191 cubic metres a day The shortfall can be covered by the reservoir which has a capacity of cubic metres but If there is a prolonged dry period the reservoir may not be able to cover the shortfall without running dry Also a third of the reservoir water must be kept for fire fighting By balancing the reservoir the shortfall has been covered in the past and there should be no problem this year if thesummer unusually dry Regional Councillor Dave Whiting described Moore plan as a worst case situation and noth ing can be done about the problem except take every step possible to advise the public He said he was pleased to see staff was giving people lots of warning and following the steps imposed after the yellow brown Hydro maintenance senices moving to the Acton building Hallon Hills Hydro is moving all of its operations involved in maintaining electrical service to Us Ac ton building following a Commission meeting Friday morn ing chairman announced the financial operations will be handled in the Georgetown office and the line and engineering departments will be located in the Acton facility on Alice St Acton res idents will still be able to pay their bills at the Acton office The announcement represents a move back to Ac ton by Hills Hydro which had only been keep ing the office open and running a skeleton crew here Work on the move to Acton began immediately and should be completed by the start of next month About a year ago it was revealed Hills Hydro was looking at selling the Acton building and other properties and building one central building for all utility operations This option remains for the future however there immediate plans for closing the Acton ility or any other building Tennant noted there were a number of changes which had to be examined after the Acton and Georgetown utilities were merged and Halton Hills assumed control of the service from Ont a no Hydro The commissioners discussed changes with both retiring superintendent Graham and the new superintendent Jerry Trade Neither the Acton nor Georgetown buildings Is big enough Tor the entire Hydro operation so recommended the split between the two middle school team for the Kid contest April and May placed tint at Stewart Iowa School over several other middle school In North The contest pitted school against school in academic contest Local team members were root row left to rlgbl Shalral Chandra J on Rogers and Maria Kril Back row Dave Ruse and Richard Crawford Every employee was Interviewed Tennant said about this new split explained about 15 people will be working out of the Acton building and perform all duties relating to maintaining service admitted it would be more economical if everything was under one roof but that would in volve a lot of money and they just can see spending or million and issuing debentures for such a project now He noted the commission had to pur chase new equipment to service Esquesing and must pay Ontario Hydro million for the rural tem over a of years This move which said Just a temper measure will give Halton Hills Hydro time to do Scotia if so desired or clients can transfer to another branch According to interim manager Freda San tonato the local branch never mode a profit and the present economic conditions of the country forced the closing David Livingston manager personal banking for MetroWest Division of which Acton is a part explained all banks are closing branches It is happening more and more he said it is not a particularly negative thing He noted that at one tunc it was felt that all banks should be in all towns but that is not the case anymore The six or seven employees will not be laidoff Livingston told The Acton but will be offered positions at other branches However some may not wish to be transferred he said The option of quitting is entirely on them He could not say how many customers arc affected by the closure as the number of counts the bank does not reflect the number of actual people doing business at the branch Some people hove more than one account Customers are not obligated to switch to the Bank of Nova Scotia He noted in the case of loans being taken from one bank to the other re writes may be necessary Customers of the bank will receive a notice of closure this week It is with regret we announce this branch will be closed on June 11 I9B2 The decision to close was not an easy one but the operation has not been viable and rising costs make our position untenable It Is
