GeorgetownActon Wednesday Sept S Derek Da a ad Joel had tit time of their lives on tab ride readers write PD day letter contained ridiculous statements Dear Sir I was very disappointed when 1 read last weeks Free Press I I opened It great expectations hoping to see the pictures of our new school which were taken by Helen Murray Instead I see a large caption about teachers goofing off on their PD day September Perhaps If you had published the pictures Mr could have seen the results of the teachers work and would not have been so rude as to suggest that teachers do not care for their students Mr letter contained many ridiculous statements He stated that the school boards should monitor days They do monitor these days I think Mr should find out a few facts before he makes any statements As for his suggestion that teachers visit a penal institution I would be quite willing to visit one if Mr would be willing to take over a class room for a day He might learn something about the true job of the teacher Respectfully Peg Graham PS I feel the picture of my students working would have made more Interesting news lhan Mr letter It also would help create a closer bond between the home and the school Hopefully the paper will get their priorities straight Editors Note We feel we do have our priorities straight Mr is a citizen of Acton and had an opinion to express This paper aims to be a forum for the exchange of opinions and ideas even controversial opinions and ideas The paper publishes all signed let ters space permitting regardless of content editing libel and slander Weeks when we receive many let ters as has been happening the last few weeks some may be held over for publication the next week As for the photos taken at the new St Josephs School the photo assignment was designed at some point to show the community Actons newest school not so much the children at work This photo spread was taken as a This Week Thru the Lens feature Staff newspaper often takes photos for this weekly feature weeks before they are in tended for publication that way we will always have one ready It so happened the week we took the pic tures at St Josephs we also covered a news event involving a number of photos of local residents the Lome School reunion- so that was published as This Week Thru the Lens In addition St Josephs was previously the subject of a photo fea ture a few weeks before the opening of school and has been in the news quite a bit of late Lastly the letter writer seems to forget the photo feature story and additional photos we published in our September issue showing teachers at local schools preparing for the return of classes We know if it promoted a closer bond between home and school but could have just as easily as more photos of children in class Acton High School graduate has moral back to this port of the country after teaching In La Pas Manitoba for two years Rick Is now at Elora and living in Fergus He was an Ontario day need Dear Sir I wish to voice my opinion con the letter by Gerald September 15 Dear Mr 1 see first hand what the life of a teacher is like As I was growing up I missed the mother daughter relationship I should have had because my mother was taking a university course to better enable herself to help your child I also see mother using about hall of her summer to work on pro grams that make school subjects fun and interesting as well as education for your child When school does start I am exp ected to do the supper dishes and other housework so that my mother is able to mark stacks of notebooks and tests or prepare Tor special act Ivities that she thinks your child will learn from and enjoy On September 7 there Mas a professional development day so that all the teachers could program the years activities For your infor each teacher is required to participate in the day meetings This day enables the teachers to know exactly what they are doing the minute your child walks through the schools doors I feel that teachers are doing a gr eat Job and need parents behind them to support them throughout the school year As a student myself I do not feel that it is the teachers fault that many young people are in penal institutions today Instead I believe that because of most teachers a lot of teenagers arc not in these places Teachers are required to teach your child the necessary knowledge set by the boards rules As well as that Job they become social work guidance counsellors refer and most of all friends to your child Why not say thankyou to these wonderful people Instead of com plaining about them not doing their Job when the whole story is not known Carolyn Gibson Grade student Acton High School and a teachers daughter Diamond Sale classic solitaires delicate small but dedicated group of Actonians who do care and who give generously of their time and talents in an endeavor to provide Acton with such a facility the Murray Memorial Most citliens do not realize that Acton is the smallest town in Ontario to have its own Y Building and that building does not receive any fund ing beyond what Its and premises use generate The members of the Acton Board along with the Ya Men and the Mentttes are ail unpaid volunteers who are seeking to raise the funds necessary upgrade the Building and Its facilities within to service not only the teens through The
