weeks ago the editor of a local paper commented on a report telephoned to him regard ing alleged irresponsible and unsafe conduct of hunters during the past J day hunt Telephone calls to the editor in question did not result in him divulging the name of the com ploinant He did however indicate the general area In which incidents supposedly took place Since only a small party of us hunted the area in question and the complaints reported did not coin with the events in this area the deer hunt some questions were posed Either the editor did not accurately report on the complaints received or he had been given erron eous information In an attempt to clarify the a letter was submitted detailing the inaccuracies of the reported incid ents It was assumed the editor in question a man of Integrity and many experience had accurately re ported the information he has re ceived As a result we pointed out the questionable statements which had apparently been made to the afore mentioned editor In response last week a further let ter was submitted by some in dividuals who have for some time attempted to gain support to prevent the local deer hunt The result has been only to further confuse and leave more unanswered questions A of statements made arc not en tirely accurate or need further ex to allow the reader to fully understand the situation The theme of the letter was basic ally Public safety The inference was the public was placed In a dangerous position due to the deer hunters Several comments were made to support the theory A statement suggests the caller was pointing out possible dangers The editorial indicated specific events had taken place which were construed as setting up a dangerous situation The incidents quoted were not a true reflection of what took place in the area in question during the hunt The mentioned house subdivision in this area is on the former drag strip property The plan colts for homes Lots have been on sale for some time As of today only one lot has been sold The dev eloper will not begin until of the 19 lots in the first phase have been sold This land is open fields and not likely to be used b deer during day I hours It t a property likely to be actively hunted for deer Reference is made to the use of rifled slugs vhch is claimed are much more dangerous than the other type shells First many hunters use only buck shot second although the slug is large and very potent at close range t does not carry as far or as well as even the The as you should know Is one or the least potent calibres available It is also probably the most used firearm in Canada The slug also rarely ricochets off stones etc This docs occur with the There are also many I powered Hospital thanks The following let was submitted to the Free Press for publication by Jayne Telford Mrs Jayne Telford Canadian Cancer Society ACTON Ontario Dear Mrr Telford On behalf of the patients and staff of Ward thank you for the beautiful The arrival of par eels from the Acton Unit Act vity Group is a very exciting time for us It is a great source of support to staff and patients to know that your group cares enough to create such lovely Items for us From all of us to you and yours best wishes for a happy I sea ours very sincerely Susan Lennox Social Work cartridges which are legal to use In this area It was further stated houses are feet apart Houses in the area range from less than 100 feet to up to yards apart along the road What t pointed out is that con cession roads are approximately a of a mile apart The land between concessions with the exception of roadside development is made up of farm land and swamps There are in this area many parcels of dense swamp some of which exceed acres in area surrounded on three sides by farm land or unused rough land The personal bad feelings which arc referred lo are not the result of stated opposition to the deer hunt but rather to the use of inaccurate mis leading and erroneous statements which cast aspersions on legitimate law abiding citizens who partake in an activity of which some disapprove They continually suggest the hunters are not capable of or responsible enough to use basic common sense and good judgement In the use of Tire- arms during the hunt During the past three deer hunts the hunters have proven they are responsible Don forget it Is our children not theirs who are on the roads waiting for the bus They have also totally ignored the request from the farming com munity on w hose land the hunt takes place for the controlled deer hunt Tl ore the ones footing Ihe bill for thousands of dollars or crop losses each year It is not my deslrt to carry on a run in the media regarding the deer hunt However will not sit back and allow misleading statements and unfounded to go unchallenged It is unfortunate there arc a few residents of the rural area who at the sound of a firearm discharging develop on unfounded unnecessary an I irrational fear for their safety It is I fortunate irrational people arc not the ones carrying the f rearms Art I taw LI chouse New truck is okayed Some 000 has been okayed for the purchase of a new truck for Hills Hydro
