come forward or say anything until the police were right on their doorstep The cleaning Ipdy has since quit her and moved to Toronto where he husband found a job according to van Hart I glad it all over he said opting not to press any charges because he did not want to ruin anyone s reputation The artist later invited the woman over to his gallery to choose a painting as a reward for tell ing him about the painting but he said she refus The woman can speak English and was scared to death about the whole thing van Hart explained She wants nothing more to do with it After the theft was discovered van Hart said he would press charges If it was found that employees at the region were the people who told the woman to take the painting She told the police at the time that the man who said she could have the painting told her he was Ihe big boss said van Hart Prominent businessmen may play a joke no one else may find funny but It s not like they are employed by the regionlo me there is a difference he said In the press release police say the case will be reviewed by the Crown Attorney The issue of the theft has aroused speculation as to when the inaugural wine and cheese recep tion ended and how much It cost but the region has not exact figures on either But in a report to administration and finance committee last week concerning the theft of the painting Chief Administrative Officer Perl in mentioned the wine and cheese reception quite late With Ihe Inaugural meeting going on as late as it did and a number of people did stay quite late hesaid Reed scoffs at job creation plan A program touted as paving the way for recovery by the federal and governments is only a pittance compared to what could be done if priorities were straight according to Julian Heed The Liberal for Burl says the money the two governments announced for a job creation program will accomplish very little in the hands of the Bill Davis Tories It remains to be seen how the government will apportion the money Mr Reed said in a tele phone interview My fear is that they use it to substitute one job for another within the According to Reed the Ontario could spend as much as SI billion an job creation but they would have to bell their Interest In Sun cor and divest themselves of the land banks he said Our research shows that money is available but getting them to spend it in that way has been a continuing mission on our part he added The most recent federal provincial agreement has the two governments contributing equally to a million fund per cent of which wilt go to municipalities for make work projects Priority for employment under the new scheme will be given to people whose umemployment Insurance benefits have run out and who arc facing the prospect of having lo apply for welfare Ontario treasurer Frank Miller has expressed concern about that saying the program should have more flexibility Projects approved under the scheme must cm ploy a minimum of three people and according to government press releases contribute to the social and betterment of the province must involve or new jobs Reed criticized the government or on make work projects as these rather than exploiting tie opportunities thut exist to create permanent employment In such as alternate energy In many cases this will only create temporary Jobs and our problems certainty won t be solved by that If the government was serious about Job lion have the capital to do something really signlfigant He noted as an example that Ontario currently pays out billion a year for imported energy and that roughly half of amount could be produced here Health Dept hires staff Calling the Halton Regional Health Department under nourished because il is listed as the eighth lowest in Ontario for staff Peter Cole obtained three new staff members for the health department The request for new super visor of dental health educators a commun health nurse a part time health Ins pec tor was approved at a special council meeting Wednesday afternoon despite some cillors objections that it was late In the year to ask for additional staff I m upset and strongly against this because it shows a blatant disregard for council direction Burlington councillor Joan Little staled She explained that council had already rejected the three new staff requests but Cole appeared to ignore council and gel funds from the Ministry of Health As the Ministry of Health will subsidize up per cent of the salaries the regions contribution Is with the remainder paid the province If the Ministry I Health does one lllng right it is this said Cole to council They have never that I know reneged on a financial agreement unlike other Ministries Burlington councillor Walter Mulkewlch supported the request as the region comes out of an 1932 conlingency fund that was clearly put aside for staff But Little maintained the fund was for emergencies not for staff say that the con llngcncy was for staff argued Cole stressing staff is needed to keep the same level of service Chief Administrative Officer Dennis Pcrlin rationale far approving the additional staff Is hat if does not accept the subsidy then It will simply In another municipality Region Key word defer The word defer appeared to be the key word at last weeks administration and finance committee meeting as four separate issues were put off until the new year Both Elizabeth Visiting Nurses Association and PARA Mr Health Services were unable to get an agreement from region to service patients in Currently Ihe Order of Nurses Branch visits people in their homes and told com they did not feci there should be an infringement Si Visiting Nurses operates from Hamilton while Para Med a division of has an office in Burlington Administration and Tina nee com mil tee agreed they Should receive more information before making a decision and deferred issue for six months agreement Despite some grumblings from regional councillors administration and committee opted to extend the operation agreement far 1963 with Disposals Limited for the temporary container transfer facility on Armstrong Avenue The rent is a substantial increase ob jected councillor Keith Bird commenting on the hike In rent to from that But Vine the region real estate manager maintained that the increase represents a number of years of very low rent Both Burlington councillors Kilter and Joan Little also objected lo the Increased rent and added a that a status report be given to committee Halton woman first female hockey trainer Industrial Arts
