least called trustees to get some answers to their questions first Mayor Peter Pomeroy said at Mon day general committee meeting Acton Councillor Rick Bon nette applauded the letter writ ten to council last week by Georgetown councillor Mike Armstrong Armstrong rapped the Board of Education its million investment with Crown Trust and the million surplus The rookie ward one representative thanked Arm strong for the letter and if the ward four wanted to be the wat over board finances the move would be welcomed by taxpayers Bonnette said he hoped the board surplus wouldn t be used to buy TVs to watch the Pay TV channel carrying soft core pom monies or for a gift like the sail boat purchased for retiring director of education Em Lavender a couple of years back Armstrong said he welcomed Bonnette s support on Honing board financial actions but joked his colleague would have to worry about being run over by a school bus too Councillor Dave Whiting noted he was Ihe first I lor to ask about the surplus and Crown Trust Investment publicly and he was pleased that Trustees Betty Fisher and Bruce came to Friday ward one councillors dropIn to explain the situation He said both ladies were gracious and he was pleased to learn the board has its budget and finances well under control now It now appears the Crown Trust investment Ihe trustees fault The board was following advice from the pro vince and t the only public caught in the truit company s mess He wonted to publicly thank the two trustees for coming to dropIn and added they will be the special guests at the March 11 dropin to answer questions from about the budget and Crown Trust matter Director of Education Wally Beevor also hopes to be on hand that day pointed out he t said anything the issue previously but he felt it was time to state that citlors should check with the of other levels of government before making statements He said the local trustees do a fine Job are credible representatives and arc available to answer lions He referred to remarks made by Armstrong about the board s financial operations as almost slanderous Coun should at least give them a chance lo cr lions before making stale- In his lew Ihere was no ton then was wrongdoing in placing the funds in Crown Trust but it wasnt the trustees who made Investment Staff members were responsible for the investment and ho said he was sure disciplinary action will be taken Quebec Today speakers subject at Mtvw Baptist Rev John S Gllmour will speak on Quebec Today at a special service at Baptist Church raises question Sh6uld Town pay for playgrounds Councillor Dave Whiting think the Town should be paying for creative play ground equipment on school properties but he wants to hear from public before a final decision on the issue is made by Halton Hills Monday night at general com he proposed that Town funds not be spent on creative playgrounds at schools in the future and then asked that the Horn be deferred He noted the subject has come up during discussion about the budget and he feels it is an issue which should be decided by council policy He explained last year parents a school wanted a creative playground but there was no money in the budget so a service club and the parents combined efforts and paid for a creative playground with little assistance from the Halton Hills should have a policy of encouraging the public to raise for playground equipment at school yards but he wants public feedback first He thinks the issue should be settled before the budget is passed Possibly as new subdivisions are built developers should be required to pay for creative playgrounds Councillor Marilyn Serjeantson suggested Councillor Mike Armstrong said her idea just wasn ap plicable to the issue Councillor John McDonald asked if playground costs have been shared by the schools and parents and vice clubs etc in the past Recreation director Tom Shepard said the answer to McDonalds question was yes and no He added the issue in Ihe reciprocal agree ment between the board and Town on shared fatalities Whiting admitted he hadn t considered that aspect the reciprocal agreement before raising the issue Councillor Russ Miller said he partially supported Whiting view He noted some school creative playgrounds haven been as strongly with Town money as others and that was unfair He said a policy is needed on how much the Town will con tribute for all school creative playgrounds Sometimes creative play grounds are located in areas where there parks Sbepard explain ed A a Deeded but there la no Town park the only place the playground can go is school property Admitting he asked council for approval he ex plained about two years ago tic decided in cases where the school requested a creative playground but if he didn feel one was really needed in the area then the Town wouldn t foot the entire bill Some schools have been fund raising for two years now to pay for a playground and this is the year that the playgrounds are to be built He predicted council will receive feedback from schools and parents who could wind up having been fund rais for two years for nothing if the playgrounds I appro v Comparing creative play grounds with sports fields the Town must give a lot of alien lion to and spend money main laming the playgrounds have been an recreative investment They have also been well received by the public and he predicted council will hear public support for creative playgrounds Whiting pointed out lo policy not department heads He said Town practises on creative playgrounds have been He suggested had the planned creative playground projects for 1983 been voted on at last week s budget commit tee meeting he thought Ihcy would have been chopped from the budget At the same lime lie thought the public should have the chance to comment before the budget is struck and if he was going to change his mind because of public input he wanted lo do so before Ihe budget is brought down not after He said he hopes tax payers will call him Johns tili Guide- Scout Week February to the Guide- Scout Week throughout Canada This special week offers
