for the past five or six seasons according to head coach Brian Saxon Last year Ihe squad played as a team in the Ac Ion Villa organization but have decided to form their own club for the sake of unity If the new Leathertown team had stayed in the Villa organization Ihey may Gems out The Central Ontario Junior B Hockey League season came to an end for the Georgelown Gemini on Friday night at the Gordon Memorial Arena but it was about 12 games later than most hockey fans anticipated The Gems were expected to go down in lour straight at play off time but their C carried them past the Blades and the Burlington Cougars before Ihe powerful Streetsville Derbys back some signs of reality dumping Ihe local club in four straight But it was not without a fight After losing and 17 1 In the opening two games of their league final It looked as if the would walk away with It But the Gems had different ideas The locals fought hard In game three los ing a On Friday they fought back from a deficit to League The league divided into three divisions of eight teams each with clubs coming from Mississauga Georgetown Toronto and Etobocoke as well as Acton The players wanted ex posure to quality soccer with an emphasis on the social side of the game Saxon reasons that both these goals will be realized with their entry into the new league Many players of very high standards come from Toronto and area to play in the weekend league now into Its 25th season of There will be a direct affiliation between the team and the Acton Youth Soccer Club Saxon wants to eventually bring players from the junior Acton squads up to play for the new organization Ninety per cent of our team are products of the Acton minor soccer program with nowhere else to play explains the coach Members of the team will be assisting with the Youth Soccer Club by coaching and or refereeing as needed The club is now training indoors every Sunday afternoon at the gymnasium in preparation for a number of exhibition games and tournaments They will be outside as soon as the recreation department allows us on the field but until then Saxon Is satisfied with gym and road workouts He is Impressed with the initial response the team has received feeling that It serves a definite need of the community providing an alternate club for the young players to recognize and work toward To kick off the season the Men will compete in a tournament starting the first weekend In May The team Is also planning a series of exhibition matches in May in Montreal Tom O Carrol is the dub president Anne Entwistle as secretary ana Ron works committee regarding great letters or numbers pasted on people backs is just one more reason why the natives get very restless with regional government With absolutely no Input from the public at large nor prior public notice this council passes a recommendation that has no relevancy to the majority of the public or landowners No angler or hunter needs to be classed as a second class citizen of this region I believe council has overstepped its duties in passing a recommendation such as this Let the public know that silly bylaws such as this are going to be debated give the public some prior notice that their freedoms are about to be infringed upon We do not need some misguided member of council making recommendations on be half of the public over and over again at Just about every council meeting when the maj ority of the landowners disagree with his points of view The Ministry of Natural Resources has done a great job of polking the last deer hunt in this region They have responded quickly to any complaints by property own ers even though they are woefully under staffed In many areas Hunter safety pro grams are well accepted and used thanks to many dedicated sportsmen and sports clubs In this area Few legitimate complaints were received regarding trespassing in the past year and certainly not all of these were legitimate hunters or anglers absolutely mere weren the complaints to warrant council passing such a resolution One would honestly think that with all the major problems real or otherwise that res lonal government has to contend with such as the threat of new gravel pits springing up In our backyard that tbey would stop drag ging up the proverbial red herrings and get along with the real business of making reg government of the people really work Despite the bad weather the past weekend was a red letter day for anglers at the Saugeen River Great catches of good sized Rainbows up to 16 pounds were rep orted Most were taken on large roe bags Light lines were a must with four pound line producing many more hits Cold clear water conditions make for wary fish Georgian Bay had plenty of slush ice along the south shore making Ashing Just about impossible Watch for an offshore wind and Weather change fishing should be especial ly good in the next two weeks at ana A couple of weeks back had a column Item and a photo was supposed to appear with it The photo was accidentally left out of the paper so we 11 try again to print both Czmunings an area reaxxnt tt an avid Bow fisherman who despite the wea ther nasi I put away his rod and reel or a few weeks like others Hetook then Gantrttka Hirer a catch to be very proud Have a good day
