Georgetown Acton Wednesday April The Rockwood Trail Riders started many children in competitive riding by If three area families had owned horse trailers competitive I might never have come lo Ontario when it did Or at least that how it sounds The three families were among the core members of Rockwood Trail Riders a group which was instrumental m bringing competitive trail riding to Southern Ontario where it has taken hold as a well known equestrian sport The group was started up because none of those people had horse transport and they wanted to belong a club Anne Dales current president of the riders ex plained So formed a club which would be within riding data nee of their homes That was yean ago when Anne was just a kid learning lo ride Now the club is celebrating its Anniversary and Anne is celebrating with the club two generations of riders and three generations of horses after its inception Those years hove been eventful Activities have grown from fa mil trail rides and cam pouts and Gymkhanas lo fully accredited and Western horse shows competitive trail rides and endur trials Membership grew from IB at the end of the first year to in the early 1970s Although there as many members at the moment the numbers are still high And the Dales family is still involved but now instead of Anne and her brothers competing against each other they compete through their children There s nothing like reminiscing about the good old days Anne and Jennifer Barr long lime member of the Trail Riders fondly recall the at mosphcre in the beginning teach ing westerners how to ride English style five minutes before a show or the days when people always brought an extra horse to a so that everyone kids amateurs and hangerson would have a chance to ride Club headquarters was an arena on the Dales family 10acre property in the Rock wood area That where the shows fun days and other events took place for Now rail rides begin on the Presbvtry Church grounds in There s room to ride there Anne also recalls the firstever horse show the trail riders put on President formerly Duncan had bought a boxful of ribbon pieces at an auction and had hand painted the strips of ribbon to give away as prizes Competitive trail riding in Ontario Anne added began with Trail Riders I think that our biggest single in those years Trail Riders is probably one of he longest running clubs in Southern and perhaps even more important its accomplishment in trail riding Jennifer added is the number of children who were given a good start with their first ponies through the club dimes and shows Some kids would come into the club with pony knowing nothing about them Their parents had never had a horse We teach how to care for their ponies how to real them how to behave with them she ccalled Sow we see these people grown showing their children how to look after heir pones and horses It s a good feeling The club has changed considerably in ars but the family atmosphere still pre vails We may be a lot more polished than we were when we first held shows but a leginner can still go there and learn And in the family can participate somehow Anne said The motto of the i lub is still horsemanship sportsmanship fellowship We aren holding any special events for our Anniversary Anne said Were just adding a little something to each event us it comes up During the season there will be English Horse Shows and Western shows endurance rides and competitive trail rides photograph and mementos of Little Sara struggles with CF Play it again Sam i expect Hi with the Humphrey
