left Switzer land in he the Brethren later called Mcnnonltes for religious liberty in the German Palatinate They left Ger many for that same reason in going to Bucks County Pennsylvania a British colony at that time The British Queen Anne assisted them and thousands of other people who wanted religious liberty Stalls who was a Loyalist came lo Clinton Township in the Beam villeareo in the 1770s Henry Rod Root came to Canada in 1799 and married Mary Overhold the daughter of Slatts They are buried in the Beam lie Bap tist Cemetery Henry and Marys oldest son was John Roots greatgrandfather John Roll who with his Nancy Mrs Mathew Smith and their families were living in Erin Township together with other pioneers several years before the Ciiy of Guelph was founded John and Nancy and a brother Isaac and many of their descendants are buried in the Conlngsby Cemetery Early this year freshman Councillor Rick Bonnet te in his first real address to council raised concerns about the care of our Fairy Lake fowl particularly the swans It a lot of laughs the council table and out in the community His stand was also staunchly supported by many in Acton who dont care for them that much but realize It Is an important part of this community But did you know the birds ducks and geese in particular are performing a valuable service to the tax pa era Every summer when its hot algae forms on the surface of the huge pond at the sewage treatment plant The taxpayers never have to pay staff or for wear and tear on equipment or for power for the equipment to have this algae removed The birds eat it up Regional stair during their open house at the sewage plant recently made a point of drawing our attention to the valuable service the birds perform adding that their service makes up for the fact the grounds are also covered by their droppings Id its worthwhile keeping our fowl population healthy and ha Just to they can clean that pond Georgetown Acton Wednesday June Editors desk Irani pan sound like he remembered vaguely mentioning such an idea when they talked just momenta before but lug firm had been arranged no details were nailed down Well on tbe road to victory he still pr lo be evasive Instead of straightforward I cant see going to Mutrooey unless he had a firm deal considering how passionate the owner is about bis proposal The deal was made have no doubt about that So why would play games afterwards Mulroney talks well but never seems to much or commit himself to anything He has style charm looks and charisma no more charisma than Id say Im Ted up with those qualities Mulroney isnt just dreadfully inexperienced I fear a fake a facade I want politicians who lell it straight no matter how painful the news may be I want honesty and humility I want a person not an illusion and an image This country has had enough of the old tried but increasingly no longer true method of playing political games with people Mulroney wos number three of the big three In Ottawa with his speech much lower in the policy sessions Hell His victory add the one he left the hall to write dldnl inspire me a bit Sure Clark would lose I stationed myself In his end for the final ballot results to ace the reaction Mixed In with the gloom was lots or bitterness even hate and contempt After the convention a lot of Mulroney boosters seemed subdued like they were pondering if Ihey d makde a mistake Forget the scene on the stage or outside caucus Monday or in the House later the same day Mulroney faces a big unity problem bigger I suspect than if Clark had returned and certainly much larger than had Crosbie won And the Liberals who are admittedly preiiy bright men must be rubbing their hands with glee waiting their chance to make mincemeat of so shallow Mulroney I expect Trudoau will be staying on for some time more just can make a fool of Mulroney on the evening news on a regular basis The federal election wont lake place until 1985 1 believe theyll want to give Mulroney lots rope and time hang himself The Tories picked him because of two factors There was a big antiJoe feeling and some PCs felt the only way they can win a majority is by picking a Never mind someone bilingual to many only a would do I think if its Mulroney versus Turner the PCs could find themselves with more seals in Quebec but fewer in the resl of the country So why didn win In Quebec the language Issue wasnt as big a deal as It was In English Canada one French journalist lold me This chap after hearing French at the convention speculated he poor man has been trying to learn the language all along but with his accent the best joke I heard was Crosbie doesnt speak either official language it has been tough slugging However this journalist thought thai while a French was labored and ft was understandable and his economic platform and genuineness could carry him In Quebec In an election ially if his French Improved Ive always believed the notion hat Joe for all his faults really believed In the party and Canada first After Ottawa I not so sure Following the second ballot when his strength hadnt grown a bit fewer people had voted second ballot and Joe was down slightly everyone In the room save maybe Joe and Maureen and a Tew advisors knew he wouldn and couldnt win Crosbles people v ere telling the CI kites that il dldntmattcr even If Crosbie went to Joe most of them wouldnt follow and It wasnt bull They meant it They were right too If Joe knew he couldnt win but stayed on anyway It can only be because he didnt care to whom he handed he party He knows both Mulroney and Crosbie well he knew whod be a better replacement but maybe he didnt care who took over if It couldnt be him Now did Joe hand the parly over to Mulroney so he could sit In the bushes and wait for a future rebirth If so it was not only foolish but despicable Or did Joe really believe a miracle could happen mat he could win on he final If so its just another example of his stupidity which he evidenced along with some admir able qualities repeatedly during the past seven The other thing which did Crosbie in besides Joe not giving up when il became evident he win was when half the field quit after he first ballot Had Wilson stayed he probably wouldnt have been below votes after the second ballot so he could have stayed for he third Clarks team did a good Job holding heir etc for the third ballot but I doubt they could have held off the hard charging Crosbie for a fourth ballot The Clark team had tough enough a time pulling it off on the third ballot Clark supporters would have seen further Joe slippage and I think enough might have bailed out after the third ballot Crosbie would have beat Mulroney on a fifth ballot Crosbie and he ABM movement needed one more ballot to get going and overtake Clark Anyway despite my strong reservations Im willing to wall and watch Maybe I m wrong I have been lots of times Maybe the man does have substance maybe his isnt something like a Trudeau of 15 years ago all style and not much to back It up Maybe now that he Is office hell start being straight with people Maybe he isnt a Grit in blue robes which comparing the very moderate of 1S7S with the right winger of today think he really la One things sure the next couple of years of Canadian politics will be verrry interest ing I can hardly wait for the Liberals to pick a new leader 111 be applying for press credentials watch it all unfold no matter where Its held Besides after years of hearing how Its only the Tories who fight among them selves that only Tories hold Im looking forward to seeing a good Liberal fight I figure a of Mood be spilled if the
