Hundred and Ninth Year Issue 7 ACTON ONTARIO WEDNESDAY AUGUST24 Pages Thirty Cents Region staff wyes council Halt growth until theres more water by Gord Murray Ha I ton region is expected to put the brakes on virtually all development in Acton even projects which have been proved until the supply of water la There are no predictions In staff reports going to council today Wednesday as to when the water supply mesa will be solved Statr is suggesting be spent on a study and tests to see what impact on Fairy Lake and Black Creek water levels of the Prospect Park well might prod Concern about water levels in the Black Creek and lake are Ihe latest roadblocks to growth here The Prospect Park well which was first dug by Acton in 1073 has been plagued by problems Council received three reports and a raft of staff recommendations dealing with the water woes of Acton today Not only does our shortage of water prevent future growth but It also means the existing population will continue to live with the spectre of water restrictions during hot dry spells hough restrictions have never been yet The region has long pinned Its hopes for solving Acton water dilemma on operating the Prospect Park well While they want to see this avenue abandoned staff is suggesting some testing to see if there is more water In the area of the existing well at the top of the Fourth Line This isnt the first time alternate sources to the Prospect Park well have been sug However regional blundering back in 1979 resulted in no action being taken on a report which suggested testing in three areas Several times the report was sent to the 1979 council the council which produced the infamous deficit then referred back to public works committee Somehow when it was referred back to committee for the final time it never wound upon the committee agenda and the report ended up gathering dust in some file Staff which uncovered the old report offered no explanation astowhythlshappened but are suggesting the report s recommendations be used now to assist staff and council In solving Acton water problems It is dlfricull to say that had action been taken back in 1979 on this report that Acton water woes would be solved today doubtedly the disappearance of the report t helped the situation That report called for an assessment of the ground water supply potential within five miles of Acton Detailed investigation of groundwater supply was suggested In three areas northwest of Acton adjacent to High way to miles from Acton Blue Springs Creek two miles west of Acton and Highway north four miles from Acton Council is also being asked to approve a staff recommendation today which would extend draft plan approval for seven months for the Danville housing development bet ween the railway tracks and the Industrial park on Highway north addition staff doesnt want the project finallied until the water supply problems are solved This means another long await and long approved Acton development will wait longer to be realized The draft plan approval extension for Danville an S3 unit residential develop ment would expire next May but the region could always extend it again if the water problems still solved This development was originally approved In May 1979 Council is also receiving an extensive rep from a consultant suggesting a water treatment plant for the Prospect Park well to solve the excess of iron and manganese problems which caused discoloration of clothes washed In this water when the well operated briefly a couple of years ago There were also complaints about the color taste and odor of water from the Prospect Park well The Prospect Park well had been studied extensively and a treatment solution was thought to have been found to solve the Iron and manganese problems treatment dldn t work Continued on pages Trevor Hoy picked forKatimaviktrip Katlmavtk program a national youth volunteer project Trevor Hoy of Jeffrey Ave has been really excited
