Terry Hay and Bob Salter Junior As slay their goliath to win Ontario championship by Robin Inicoe The Fastball season may not be over for the Acton Junior A ball club but It sure is complete The local squad qualified for the Championships last week and made no mistakes They claimed the Ontario Junior title going undefeated In the double knockout tourney The A are in their first year of existence as a Junior club but have been terroriiing several area teams al the Junior and Indus trial level for some time and most people knew It would only be a matter of time be fore the team cashed In with some big prize It turned out to be an Ontario Champion ship It unbelievable for our first year stated a weary coach Steve Marshall It t matter what we did it worked Pinch runners hitters and defensive replacements all came through The A made the rip to Jordan for the championship event with high aspirations knowing that If they played their best they would be tough to beat and play they did After a poor performance in their opening game in which they made five errors and picked up but two hits In beating Carrying Place 2 the A were near flawless making two fielding errors in the next three games behind pitcher Roy Spear After claiming the win over Carrying Place wilh a run in the bottom of the seventh the Acton squad took on Caledonia in a see saw affair that could have gone either way Fortunately for the blue red and white it went their way as they scored a solo run In the bottom of the tenth notching a 32 vie tory and setting up a meeting the local squad was awaiting All season long Maryhlll had been Acton in Ontario Junior Fastball League play as the opposition won all three meet but the Ontario championships were different The A were fired up and got by giants with their second straight extra inning win defeating 1 It gave the A a the easy route to the crown as they tat and waited while bat lied with Port Perry for the right to play the A Maryhlll scored a win and it was against Acton one more lime this time with the Ontario Championship Trophy at stake The As made no mistake needed to win two In a row from Acton but the locals werent intending Jo give them any victories scoring a 1 win to claim Jhe year old Jim Memorial emblematic of being Ontario Junior Fastball Champions Acton Place The A started slowly in the tourney play very poorly in their opening game according to coach Marshall but they man aged to gain the much needed first win pile being out hit nine to three Carrying Place a lead off batter claimed the lone run for his side and It until the fourth that the A s found the equaliser Kelly led off the inning with a triple and scored as Roy Spear sacrificed him to the plate The A held their opposition at bay until they could manage the one more run they needed Roy Spear triple to lead off final inning was the blow Acton Deeded Tim Evans laid down a perfect bunt and Spear touched the plate with the winning tally Dick Spear started on the mount for the going the first five Inning before giving way to brother Roy who cleaned up They had no pitching and we struck oat right left and centre commented Mar ahall Acton claimed three bits in the coo teat bat all were triples Baker bad a Brat toning poke Acta Mania I Caledonia expected to be tough In the took the locals ten Innings to their ace straight win but they had to come from behind to do it The two teams split runs in the mandatory seven innings each team scoring in the fourth In the ninth ft looked as if the A would falter as they gave up a run but the locals dug deep In the bottom of the inning Baker reached on an error but was forced at second as Glenn Scott reached on a fielder choice A second error by the Caledonia Infield allowed Scott to score on a unique play According to Marshall he sent Scott around third toward the plate but speedster was taught cold As the catcher went down to make the tag Scott tried the high hurdles landing on the plate avoiding the tag and forcing the game to go into further extra innings Safe time I don I believe it was the comment from the umpire according to Marshall as he smiled while visualizing the play again on Monday The hurdle paid off as the A s came back in the tenth as Mark Duval led off the inntng with single scoring as Rusty Elliott put a ball in play Roy Spear went the distance for A allowing just five hits In ten innings and recording claimed only two hits with McArthur and Duval picking up those It was a super ball game stated the coach and it was the start of our errorless ball Acton All season long the A a have wanted to get even with Maryhlll and Roy Spear was to be the giant killer Spear allowed Maryhlll just five hits over eight innings and struck out 14 to help the winning cause It didn t look good for the A s early as Spear allowed a pair of first inning walks and then a two run triple but from there on he was nearly unbeatable The A pulled to within one in the third as Rob Vermuelen reached base safely and scored on Gord double Acton tied the count an inning later as Glenn Scott did the damage pounding a triple and scoring with Kelly McArthur turn at bat Back to back singles from Scott and Kelly put Mary hill In a deep hole and a free pass to Roy Spear loaded the bases Dick Spear squeeze bun sent Scott scoot home with the winning run Acton 3MaryhliH The A had several options open going into the first game of the final but chose to stick with Roy Spear on the mound and It paid off once again as Spear allowed one run on eight hits leading the way to the title For the first time In the tourney Ihe A s visitors They made the most of their early opportunity as Scott singled and scored on Kelly double for the first inning lead As the game progressed Maryhill did all their scoring in the first inning Hurler Spear hit two batsmen and a single tied the score Vermuelen reached on an error in the third inning and it would be the error that eventually cost Maryhlll the Ontario title Vermuelen rounded the bases scoring as Gord McArthur put the ball in play giving Acton the go ahead and eventual winning run The A a added insurance in the top of the seventh inning as Duval singled and scored In the bottom of the Inning Roy Spear bore down fanning the first two hitters before two bunt singles threatened to prolong the game Spear got the next batter to ground out and the A a celebration began A coach Steve Marshall bad praise for all his players after the tourney feeling that each contributed and did their part In help ing win the Ontario crown He bad special praise for catcher Tim Baker who caught ail but five innings the four games allow tog but one passed bail He was exceptional pleased with Elliott and Vermeukn at first and third The pair played the comers without making an error Dick Spear moved to second and turned in a solid effort as did Kelly McArthur who fil ted in for Rick Greenly at shortstop Duval who Is normally a late game defensive replacement came up big with the bat going three for four over the four games Gord spent the weekend In left field and batting first In the order reaching base five times Dave Wilson started all the contests In right for his bat before Duval come on for defensive reasons Scott played his usual solid game In cent re field and carried a big while Evans speed as a pinch runner Don Casselman did his Job as a defensive replacement in the weekend set while Roy Spear claimed honors as the out standing pitcher hurling innings and allowing Just five runs For their efforts the team earned the Trophy which was first presented to Hastings in 1949 Sport bogs and a set of mugs Now it back to league playoffs where the A hope to do a little more slay They expect to meet in the first round of league short in a game against high flying Mariners in Georgetown Wednesday night Needless to say Villa were at the mercy of the Georgetown team and were eventually hammered Acton came up with a spirited per in the first half and came off the field at the break only trailing Peter Comstive playing hia first game in a while scored Villa a only goal snowing that return will help Acton in their final playoff drive In the second half Villa again held their until about the final 30 minutes when the Mariners who were continually pre sing put thegame out of reach Barry Crad dock who has turned out to be a real find for Acton was their outstanding player although all nine players gave 100 per cent Villa play at home tonight Wednesday against Butcher in what really is a four point game as it Is the final regular season game for Acton as well as the makeup of the abandoned game against Butcher from July The wnner of the game will receive four points as in reality It is two games in one This could prove to be a key game for Villa and the Kenji trio who have missed the past two games show up for this one This game promises to be a high i spirited affair with both teams trying to grab glory Come on out and urge Villa J on and see some entertaining soccer at the same lime Villa B finish with draw by Dave In an Interesting game Acton Villa B finished off the regular season of the Inter County Second Division with a scoreless draw at home against of Georgetown Ajax escaped Acton with one point thanks mainly to some very poor finishing by the Acton forwards Villa who played better than usual had more chances than they normally do But nobody seemed to be able to put the ball in the net Acton closest call was when full back Fred Blaln moved up on a comer kick and his taken header Just sailed past the Post Centre half Go r die Bruce was again Villa outstanding player defensively with Ted also playing well in a role Acton who finished last in the seven team loop start the playoffs this week and if they play as well as they did In this game could pull off an upset In the first round They must manage to hit the back of the net a few times though The travel to Georgetown for the first game Wednesday tonight to face the Eagles al Trafalgar off This is a two game total goals series with the second game to be played at Acton the following week
