Georgetown It was a fast entertaining game played under ideal conditions with excellent officiating by local referees Leathertown controlled most of the at tacking play in the first half but failed to score on several opportunities as George town took the lead Coming back for the second half the young Acton squad of 15 men were in a fighting mood Scott Malcolms hustle and John Semenacs play regular season play over the weekend dropping their first match Friday night to But then playing strongly Saturday night Acton managed to overpower the for their first victory It was anyones game Friday night the Sabres proved fiercely competitive against the Colts Unfortunately for the Sabrea Barrle managed to hang on to a one goal lead in the second period to defeat Acton Frank the Sabres general manager commented The boys did really well against Barrie They played a good clean game and it was Just unfortunate that we lost I think we could Just have as easily won the game concluded opened the scoring at of the first period with a quick break through the Sabres defense The Sabres down one goal less than two minutes Into the game suddenly came alive a moment later From the disorganization came several well executed plays that ulti mately led to a picture perfect goal by Karl Meyer Assisted by Scott Kennedy Meyer slipped into eked up the pass from Kennedy found his corner of the net and scored With the game tied the Sabres found themselves on a roll Two minutes after their first goal the Sabres took the lead with another series of passing plays Mike intercepted a pass from Ken Kavanagh dekedaround the goal- tender and flipped the puck Into the net By now the Sabres were running like a welloiled machine The Sabres penalty box seats were getting cold as the Acton team kept all of the dirty plays out of the game Although the Sabres were playing a great game It was the sheer determination of a player that poked the puck past the Acton goalkeeper Fred Feu during a scramble front of the net With the game tied up the Sabres became even more determined and at 1311 on a power play broke away from the Colts defense with a pass from the Barrle goal- tender Kavanagh picked out an empty piece of the net and scored The Sabres coach Gary Hudson had a trace of a smile as the Sabres took the lead for the second time but that little smile was soon a grin as Mark Symes assisted by Dennis Kirton and John Turner managed to beat the Colts Unfortunately for the Stores their luck ran out A wildly bouncing puck rebounded off the boards behind the net and coming back out to an unsuspecting goalkeeper the puck ricocheted oft a shin pad and went Into the net The Sabres two goal lead was narrowed to one by a Duke and as the Sabres re grouped a vengeful Colts took their toll by scoring another quick goal At the end of the first period the game was tied Coming back onto the Ice for the second period the Sabres were looking anything but down The two team shad seemingly come to a standoff as neither one could break through the defense The Sabres managed to hold off the Colts until the end of the second period when Barrle eluded the Acton defense and took the lead Going into the third period one goal down didnt discourage the Sabres However playing a good game Just enough as the Colts on a power play beat to take a two goal lead Symes scored Actons final goal midway into the final period with an assist from Meyer but It Just enough to over- come the Colts who the Sabres It was a completely different story Satur day as the Sabres took control of the road game against Mimico Opening the scoring for the Sabrei Karl Meyer assisted by Paul Barrett Lata in the first period Meyer able to beat the Monarchs goalie while shorthanded retaliated early in the second period to tie the game at one goal apiece The rest of the second period remained scoreless Coming Into the third period a roving managed to take the lead with a quick goal Being a goal behind must have set off the Sabres because a few moments later Randy Cbverdale assisted by Rick Dodds and Ken Franklin blasted puck past the Mimico goaltender Just seconds after the tying goal Mike assisted by Paul and Dodds rocketed through the defense to score The Sabres were definitely hot as Just moments later they scored again received passes from Kavanagh and wica to thwart
