GeorgetownActon Wednesday May 23 1984 3 Katimavik experiences jar Denise but she recommends the program by survived That how the 19- yearold Acton girl describes the completion of nine months in three different Canadian communities through he Katimavik program Survival was a major accomplishment since the odds were and she almost The group she was with had a lot to over come and six out of 12didnt manage to stick it out to the end Two people dropped out after the first move from British Columbia to Fort Hope Ontario Three dropped out after the first month in Port Hope Abbots ford is only a minute drive from Vancouver Hope is a fly in community of people miles north of Thunder Bay The culture shock was too much for some people in the group was living in a house with no central heating and some places didn have running water It really shook us up says Denise In a go anywhere people is all you saw I was ready to go home There was no sense of rewarding work Picking up gar in front of other people houses in not fulfilling It really degraded us she says She admits it was interesting but she I go back Her third and final stop put her right in the middle of the French English dilemma Dilbey spent nine months in different parts of Canada on the ik program The earold girl got back April 13 Clair New Brunswick is an all French community of approximately 1 700 Only one of the remaining six group spoke French Working in a nursing home they sewed cooked and baked for the elderly people but there t a lot for the kids to do and there was a communication problem says Denise They didnt accept us the way we ex She ran up against even more of a language barrier at the home for the elderly where she began to work next The group was in charge of setting up recreation for the people living In a home for the aged When they found out we were English and they t want to do what we had set up for them they would Just say they understand says The group wasn being very effective so were reassigned They went to a kin dergarten classroom where they helped teach the kids Denise and one other girl in the group had picked up some French out of necessity Denise was being billeted by an all French family We humans learn out of necessity she concludes That statement almost sums up the whole Katimavik program Young people from across Canada spend three months in three different communities in Canada where they do community work for J a day plus room and board At the end of the nine months they receive 1 000 and her fellow adventurers were not in it for the money so why did she want to chop wood mend fences and paint walls for nine months I believe once opportunity knocks you can t shut he door ae was five months away from graduating from umber College a Retail Cooperative Marketing and Management program and bad a good job as a trainee manager at Kmart when her sister Dineen who doesnt get back from the program until July brought home two application forms Denise Tilled one out and was accepted So she took it She says she feels she would have had more responsibilities when she got out of school and got a permanent job and she have been able to leave as easily There a a whole world out there to see and you have to lose something to gain There has to be a sacrifice she says Also she wasn sure what she wanted She thought might be able to help her figure it out She is now working In a Japanese restaurant in Rexdale exercising the language she perfected during the year she spent In Japan as a Rotary Club cultural exchange student two years ago The French she picked up in Clair may help her get a Job teaching French and English in a Quebec University She applied to University and if she is offered the Job shell take it Besides boning up on her French she learned a lot about nutrition through the program The group bad to make their own 100 per cent whole wheat bread Junk food was discouraged She also learned a lot about herself and other people People that don l know arc able to point out things that good at lhatjou know you were good at she sajs They may point out a knack for that friends and family she She found she had to amuse herself a lot to fill in the time she had at night when she wasnt working Sometimes everyone put their ideas together to come up with something to do she says The program fulfilled her in some She derived a lot of of figuring out for herself how to chop wood and learning how to bake bread finding out she can do things she didn know do before The program is for with in iipui mind she says She recommends it In fact she liked it so much she plans to apply in another year or two to go back as i group leader The group operates as a and got close to a number of people Slit made close friends with whom she corresponds and visits occasionally But it was just one of the life has to offer and si eagerly looking forward to the next one whatever it might be Liberals pick June delegation By
