noted for manifestations of patriotic fervor We can get sentimental at times such as when Terry Fox trotted across the country on one artificial leg or when the hockey pros beat Russia on a goal by Paul Henderson At other times we get a collective lump when they play the national anthem at some event in which we have done well Chests swell and eyes water then but as a group we are a pretty restrained bunch keeping feelings to ourselves and downplaying our achievements while others blow their horns and bask in the spotlight We love to grouse about our failures while almost the entire rest of the world tells us how fortunate we are to live in a country where freedom is a fact of life and opportunities exist for almost anyone who wants them Mondays our official holiday to celebrate this na tions birthday and there are celebrations plan ned in Halton Hills In Glen Williams they have a full day of fun planned on Satur day and welcome everyone and both small hamlets with plenty of enthusiasm have events planned for the long weekend Monday night at dusk Ac ton firefighters are staging their annual fireworks show at Prospect Park on Fairy Lake to celebrate the occa sion So enjoy yourself and happy birthday Canada Wolf whistles Modesty and good taste in clothes has always been the accepted standard in communities across Canada both large and small At one time it pro bably led to the excessive prudery which character ized the Victorian Age Now the pendulum seems to have swung as far in the other direction on days that are only moderately warm not even hot People of both sexes are now exposing so much skin it leaves little to the imagination and shows very poor taste On really hot days the attire would not even be accepted at beaches let alone the streets of the community Much has been written about assaults on women and their cause but titillating dress and im modest attire known to create problems where none existed before has been little mentioned String bikinis and other attire of that ilk is fine at the beach and in the privacy of the home and property but is boundto create more than wolf whistles on the street Shots in the dark Those who attended the Citizen of the Year dinner honoring Dr David van Bent were almost unanimous in their praise for the citationroast writ ten and delivered by Jon Hurst a good friend of Dr van Bents Of course he had good material to work with The piano stylings of An dreas Thiel at a Guelph restaurant are attracting the enthusiastic comments of diners The young Acton youth recently won first place in the Edward Johnson music competi tion held in conjunction with the Guelph Spring Festival back in May He played an eight minute program then Romance by Schumann and Etude de Sonorite to win first place and The talented young artist shows he is as much at home with pop music as show tunes at his four night a week gig at the China Tiki on a baby grand The restaurateur is delighted with the response of diners of course Halton Regional Council turned down colleague Bill Johnsons pitch for an almost costfree region landfill site at the Nelson Quarry with hardly a twitch of the eye but the money they are spending on a detailed analysis of sites in the region is almost unbelievable Ac cording to figures in the latest booklet they intend to spend on the se cond stage of the study on the selection of a preferred site Add that to the bill they have already spent and were talking millions Time they talked some sense Its graduation time and The Free Press does its best to include all the pic ture both we have everything sorted out and we nope to present an attractive news and editorial package each week that will have customers lining up for the paper each week x J as- so tip e COP Our readers write An error in Campbell message Dear Sir Subsequent to the recent publication In Acton Free Press by Renaissance of Day Appeal for Justice addressed to John Paul we have received a gracious communication from the Ontario Separate School Trustees Associa tion correcting an error in our message Our ad stated that virtually no Roman Catholic voice has been heard an behalf of Catholic religious parents who arc denied any of the educational rights en joyed exclusively by Roman Catholics In fact a position paper presented to Premier Davis November 1981 by the Ontario Separate School Trustees Associa tion contained the following proposal entitled Subsidy for Private Religious Schools 80 We propose that subject to the preceding paragraph some type of partial funding be con sidered for private religiously- oriented schools perhaps as distinct parts of the public school system such as the Schools in Calgary at least as far as operating expenditures are con cerned This might take place in the context of a partial remission by the province of the alleviation it experiences in provincial grant because of double taxation 86a Our reference to religiouslyoriented schools is not intended to exclude the Just claims of other schools based on legiti mate parental option According to the Ontario Separate School Trustees Associa tion correspondence the paragraph numbered was specifically approved by Cardinal Archbishop of Toronto Let me hasten to apologize then for having inadvertantly erred in our Renaissance Fathers Day Appeal for Justice by charging that Roman Catholic leadership In Ontario demonstrates an ex clusive dedication to their own corporate self interests while apparently ignoring the desperate economic and social plight of those suffering from the abovenoted injustice the discrimination practiced against nonCatholic Christian Jewish and other religious parents whose human rights are send their children and direct their taxes to schools which will serve the parents in transmitting their values to their children I regret that that erroneous impression had not been corrected when I stated that concern while addressing the Ontario Separate Schools Trustees Association convention In Toronto a couple of months ago At the same time I welcome this opportunity to publicly applaud the representations that have indeed been made by Roman Catholic leaders to redress the discrimina tion in its educational policies practiced by the Ontario Govern ment against nonCatholic religious parents Finally it should be said that I still consider valid the view ex pressed In our Fathers Day message that it would be a denial of Christ and all He represents of justice and goodness for the Roman Catholic Church to accept another CENT of the fun ding Roman Catholics deserve for their educational system WITHOUT INSISTING that the same economic Justice be provided by the government for all non- Roman Catholic Christians Jewish and other religious parents Thank you for providing space for the publication of this correc tion apology and reaffirmation of our views on this subject Sincerely Renaissance Canada Ken Campbell President Liberal Leader David Peterson released in the Legislature figures on students registered with Canada Employment centres which showed that of the registered in Toronto only found work Of 12127 registered in Ottawa ob tained work of registered in Hamilton only i 906 were successful The figures for Windwor were 806 out of 3797 for Peterborough out of Noting that the Metro Social Plan ning Council has expressed the view that youths are unemployed in Canada as opposed to the reported by Ottawa he asked the Treasurer how many young people are really unemployed in Ontario and how he planned to attack this real problem The Treasurer stated that the government will create more than 100000 Jobs for those young people but not just shortterm jobs which fall to solve the youth unemployment problem He referred to measures in his budget of last month which will take a lot of those young people and give them educational upgrading job training job experience and some jobs In his view that was the right approach whether there are 169000 young people unemployed in Ontario or You will recall that the budget stated there would be a special hot line which people could call for information about the governments new youthtraining programs David Peterson asked Why is the Treasurer trying to fool people that he is providing meaningful informa tion when his own youth hotline peo ple do not know what his programs are School Funding We have pledged support for swift passage of the legislation giving full Ontario government funding to Roman Catholic Separate Schools Following the Premiers announce ment on the question David Peter son said It is a matter of basic Justice that grants be extended to separate schools through grades 11 12 and 13 As long ago as mi the Reportfrom Queens Park Liberal Party was advocating the extension of the grants David Peterson pointed out commenting I only regret that it has taken this long for the Ontario government to see the justice of the move Liberal House Leader Robert Nix on who as Party Leader advocated full funding for separate schools prior to the 1971 Ontario General Election said he felt vindicated by the Premiers belated announce ment For years the Premier had steadfastly refused to provide the funds needed for separate school boards to finance courses in the senior grades During the 1971 election he main tained that extension of grants would destroy the provincial educa tional system He claimed A com plete education system determined by denominational and religious considerations would fragment the present system beyond recognition and repair Bob Nixon stated the principle of equality of education is the cornerstone of my party a policy This principle requires that both systems be treated equally In reversing his longheld opposi tion to such grants the Premier in sisted I was right then and Im right now While be stated that his conscience was guiding him observers noted that the separate school population is growing and the Premier is probably trying to gain voting support in the Catholic community Workers Compensation Opposition Members have charg ed that lite longawaited amend ments to the Ontario workers by JULIAN REED MPP HaltonBnrliogton compensation system ignore the most crucial problems facing workers In tabling amendments which were four years in the mak ing the Minister of Labour dis regarded the core of recommenda tions made in two reports to the Government by law professor Paul Welter In his two reports on perma nent partial disabilities and in dustrial disease Weiler made recommendations which would af fect more than workers who form the majority of people on compensation and suffer from partial disabilities The Minister claimed that the Government has decided on a phas ed program of reform to imple ment two basic Thrusts which emerged from the studies the first of which was to make the Workers Compensation Board more open and responsive to client needs In his view the structural changes effectively met this de mand including the creation of an independent tripartite appeal tribunal with provision for Indepen dent medical opinion a new panel to advise on criteria for compensation victims of industrial disease and the inclusion of domestic workers under the act The socalled meat chart was the second area of concern This chart determines how much a worker may be compensated depending on which organ or limb has been lost or disabled and in jured workers ax well aa Workers Copi Board officials have long agreed that the chart is an un fair system
