REGISTRATION Saturday Sept 8 at ACTON COMMUNITY CENTRE 10 am 12 noon FEE per person Holmes plate by Holmes Well this is it my first column I been itching for some tune to start one and here It Is The reason for starting this column Is basically to hav e some space lo comment on the happenings and issues concerning sports in the Acton area While many columnists use their space gripe and complain I hope lo get away from that trend although 1 imagine times 1 be bitching along with the best of them To begin with III talk a little about myself I grew up in a small town called Kincardine which is not at all unlike Acton The people are quite friend many of the same issues that concern Acton are the same and sports is probably the most important leisure time activity To tell the truth when I was spending career in journalism I certainly see myself as a sports writer However having been the Acton arena when the Acton Sabres finally got together and won a game and seeing the look on a 10yearold face when he scored a goal for the first time in his life has made the job a pleasure I look forward each week sec local squads facing teams from other centres and beating the proverbial pants them It tends to creale a firm loyalty to the I own and its people who were strangers a year ago when I first came to town I like to thank the many people who made my job easier by sending in game reports and phone me once in a while to tell me what they and their teams are up to now I d also like to say the coaches and the parents who take the time give each young sports enthusiast a chance to aspire to athletic greatness certainly have taken on a noble responsibility Before this column turning into a book Id like to say one more thing Ron and Carol Robinson along with the have taken it upon themselves to go above the call of duty in making minor organization in Acton something kid involved can be proud of The idea of sending two teams lo for is something like the idea Sir Hillary must have had when he first stared at Mount Everest While said it be done the never never Instead of reiving on parents to foot the bill the has taken on the task of raising of dollars lo stnd the teams The benefits of venture go far a nee for the hockey The that go over will be presenting Won and tor that matter all of is a town wcrt residents have been screaming that are losing their small town idtntitv two teams travelling to some of lint identity may be restored The MH thur Jnd worth while cause more than just a passing interest from people They need support Foodland Atoms crush Eramosa In
