MAKE Christmas a little early Six boxes of colorful hand knitted lap robes bed jackets and mittens brought cancer patients at Princess Margaret Hospital Toronto an early Christinas thanks to local Cancer Society workers A group of local has been knit ting for weeks with wool supplied by the Cancer Society and bits and pieces of their own wool The colors are gorgeous said Cloie Perkins who delivered the boxes Every year the Acton unit delivers knitted clothing along with tea coffee sugar jams and baked goods to the hospital This year for the first time since Sick Children Hospital began treating children suffering from cancer they delivered a box to Sick Kids as well The Acton community has con generously said organizer They have lots of spirit The knitted clothing was delivered early because it was ready to go and it gets cold before Christmas she said Hospital officials were delighted to get the boxes early said Perkins who has been delivering the boxes with her husband George for several years Hospital officials said they were glad to see the knitted goods because they were out of some things and running low on others Perkins said really appreciated it This year Acton donated bed jackets lap robes pairs of slippers four pairs of socks four toques two pairs of mittens and one scarf to Princess Margaret and two boy sweaters five baby outfits five pairs of slippers six toques three pairs of mittens and one scarf to Sick Children a People also added some books The food for afternoon tea and snacks will be sent to the Princess Margaret Lodge The Cancer Society will gladly take any odds and ends of wool anyone has lying around to help with next years knitting said Mrs Sally Ann spreading some Christmas cheer Rodney Burnt Corey Lindsay and Michael mam making Christmas ma merit at St Joseph School Ontario Bicentennial celebrations last Wednesday A complete Christmas dinner with all the trimmings is very special and welcome gift for close to 100 local families around this time of year The Salvation Army with the financial and physical help of Rotary Club members and the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire will be packing Captain Wilson Parrln and Joyce Sprowl of th IODE will again bo packing Christmas hamper lor local needy residents TheSalva tlon Army and the Rotary Club are joining forces to make Christmas a lit tie easier and a lot happier for many area peo ple Christmas hampers for the needy again this ear About hampers were distributed last year and Capt Wilson Penin of the Salva Army says just as many will be given out this year probably more The hampers will contain Christmas dinner some other food and some will in elude toys The hampers will be worth approximately each and will be delivered to older or disabled people who are unable to pick them up at the Salvation Army Mill St mission The Army gets help from social workers who sort through applications and verify facts such as Income job and financial situation Donations of canned goods are accepted but they are usually sent out to needy people immediately Monetary donations are a better way of helping with the packing of the hampers says Capt Perrin We encourage people to give money so we can make quick use of he says We can buy Just what we want for the ham pers Donations made during Christmas not Our help doesn atop there We re helping people on a regular basis all year round The Salvation Army believes in the spirit of giving And we try to practise what we preach Capt Perrin says If you would like to make a donation you can
