Issue be- a tempest in a teapot The instigators of the petition to destroy our airport were able to get around 150 signa tures which spread as far as In spite of the petition we iunctloned for about a year in which time we were able to prove that It did not create any unusual annoyance to anyone Nonetheless we received an order of closure by the DOT enumerating a variety of sons Since our closure a number of people have asked mo If we are operating A few planes owned by local pilots are baaed here It is possible your readers might like to read an excerpt or two from my book written in diary form entitled I went down with my ship Their questions are answered therein and I would appreciate your printing this portion Dec 1970 the year draws to a close we cast a backward glance and review certain events Our complex bad reached Its realization Al though plagued with reverses that seemed we have been able to add new recrea tional facilities each year This was the year our castles in Spain were complete seemed Recreation is becom ing more Important especially for those who work in an of tension and res ponsibility We fire able to of fer an and relaxing environment for all ages Host of the acre area is Win operated in farming particular- i the growing of oats hay wheat and red clover seed Certain areas of the form which were not productive were designated for our resort segment After the develop ment of the lake fed by a na tural spring source it was tur ned into a swim area It Is not our ambition to de velop a large campsite which usually becomes crowded and noisy thus we can offer a rest ful aeculslon to our clientele By we were able to commodate lying tourists was here you could step out of a plane onto a horse We could teach our guests how to fly a plane or ride a borse In addi tion tbey can change from horses to or This summer we Improved our picnic faculties by installing large sun umbrellas on the ta bles We hope to have our western style coach in opera tion by summer of 71 Dec No further word Jut i come from a Toronto list who contacted me lug bis desire to locate In Geor getown His reason because be and his family are flyers and wished to have his planes at our airport I explained our situation concerning the clos ure He was impressed with Georgetown for a relocation of his plant and borne Since closure of the air port about March many people have asked if it is in operation They see planes ar ound the runway Our airport has ceased to function com mercially and is used by a few Georgetown flyers who have the courage to defy the clos ure order and continue to base their planes here Although a few of my good neighbors have made efforts to have these fly ers removed the officials will not prosecute or implement flight rule unless the of fenders are brought to court action by a person filing a complaint The airport issue received widespread recogni tion because of the extreme measures taken by one or two residents to have it closed for reasons which contained little or no substance I went down to defeat emerging as a monster in my own neighbour hood The only person in Can ada who cannot fly In or but of bis own airport legally But I do retain the distinction being allowed to tow my rockei Jet around which holds about five kids In this way I can compare with George I can fly with foot on the ground Dec Occasionally look toward the airport and Its ghostlike atmosphere reminds me of my great defeat My casties In Spain crumbled At last they found their mark went down with my ship Capt J Ross S S Outlaw Jan 1971 I think Im com ing up again We have entered the threshold of 1971 and I am carried away with optimism Last year was one of challenge and adventure What is life without either Our is a Journey and I am grateful for every step of the way Feb No reply from the DOT concerning the status of an aeronautical engineer desir ing to operate a plane servicing business In the hangar The only time I hear from the DOT is when tbey want to put me out of business Its becoming obvious that something should be done with the hangar Per haps It could be turned into a dance hall Hangar Hall would be a good name There are oth er uses of a more elevating na ture with a few architectural alterations For convent or a monastery A sanc tuary for puritans is needed In our community In time my neighbours would recover from the shock associated with such a transformation At last the Ross Lake complex which was born in corruption will rise in glory and I shall emerge from cocoon of on outlaw to the reverence of a priest My next step in progress would be In reformation It would be advis able to enter into the ministry that is the ministry of trans- pott Rev J Rebel Ross S S Outlaw Minister of Transport Drive Dear Sir First of all I have to agree with Mr Snlders letter to the Herald in which he sta ted quote I know absolute ly nothing however in all fairness he did make some observations Lets look at some facts to Mr Snlders complaints Evergreens that wero planted lost summer would hardly show above the snow which is waist deep would they Was there fence the area to protect these trees Were there any posted signs If you cant answer these questions how could the snowmobiler I agree with Mr Snider that tbey shouldnt be driving on the road 3 abreast I do not agree that they were op erating at top speed on glare ice because it is practically im possible anyway the fact here is he stated 40 the speed limit on an unmarked road is so whats your com plaint Two machines parked out aide drinking establishment town on a Saturday I ask yon one question How many cars were parked alongside theso machines As for the driver going through the plaia hes got a licence and plates and if he feels safe I would say this his business In all fairness to Mr Snider I do not claim that are per cent innocent for from it but I will say that they are a special kind person For example If you have a break down on tho high way how many motorists will assist you So many times this year I have Just been Hopped for no special reason and have bad machines stop was alright Mr Snider you really to drive one first before you can fairly condemn us owners The same applies to the rec reation committee II its votes they arc looking tor instead of trying to cut down for a lot of people why not piomote it thats what the committee is there for Exam ple how about lights for a fastball diamond It will soon be spring or docs Georgetown always have to be last Facts are that the maj ority of ore tween the ages of and years and you are trying handcuff their recreation In 80 per cent of the cases Georgetown streets art used for access routes only Most of the time they are san ded and salted and I am sure I dont want to run up down three streets all night when I can got out of town in minute I feel the bylaw we have now is sufficient As for the GRC proposal of limiting snowmobiles to the fair grounds Its obvious that none of these people know what they ore saying could you picture snowmobiles and trailers at the pork on a Sun day There would surely be some accidents never mind the complaints of the people in approximately a two mile radius If thats the best the can do and not leave well enough alone I guess all I have to to that and I from the speech Fuddle Jack Handy being treated very unfairly and have been so for past two years since this area began to develop You inherited a bad problem but now you and your council have tho opportu nity to correct this grievous sit uation left by your predecessors I am looking forward to your reply and trust that it will be affirmative that Mountolnview will be repaired Immediately Sincerely McLean Mountains Not Scenery He Drives Over Them Pennington Cres Dear Sir Could you include this letter I have sent to Georgetowns mayor In a future Mailbag col umn please Dear Mayor Smith Pennington Crescent as you know runs onto From the name Mountalnvlew one would assume It to be a street from which mountains may be seen in the distance or at least rolling hillside Mountains can indeed be seen especially if one drives over Mountalnvlew today The I refer to are not hose one usually enjoys but ore those sees from the bottom of the treacherous craters which arc most a bund the road Perhaps the astronauts should be Invited to do their moon walk training on Mountalnvlew I believe they would find the terrain very similar Perhaps the best way to convey to you and your fel low Just how hor rible the road surface Is would be for you and your council to take your entire families for a drive up and down Mountain- view I believe that after such a drive you too will agree that it Is not a road as such but mere- pitted rutted hurdled for one In a town the size of and a road as major as there is in my opinion absolutely no excuse for such disgraceful road to exist solution at this time of year since no paving can be done would be to have the road graded dally and noon as Spring thawing allows the road should be made by having good paving job done Those of us who must to get to and from the shopping plazas and the other shops on Highway ore for the
