citing The flight from Lisbon to Ma drid took three hours There wasnt a cloud in the sky we hod a good view of country we were flying over had my nose glued to the win dow all the way and from what I could see Id say we were lucky to be flying not driving over that barren brown moun tainous terrain Approaching Madrid the mountains disap peared and the land levelled out but still looked anything but lush IT WAS SUNNY and cool in Madrid that early May day Hotel room came as shock after the opulence of the in Lisbon It was comor table enough but extremely small Asked for a larger but no luck The hotel was Jammed to the rooftop How ever as It turned out the room was quiet situated on the side away from the street great for sleeping Sleeping was farthest from my thoughts the just after our arrival I could hardly wait for our baggage to come up before setting out to explore Madrid Waiting impatiently at to hail a taxi we not that here as In Lisbon the taxis were all Mercedes And when we paid our fare we noted another similarity Here too taxis were ridiculous ly cheap Getting our bearings as we drove down town we judged that our hotel was situated on one of the main traffic arter ies a six lane thoroughfare with a broad strip of treed parkland separating the two streams of traffic Several out door cafes with colourful under the trees bad caught our eye in passing was I inch time so wo bad the taxi drop us at a cafe located on the edge of the main bus- loess area IT WAS PLEASANT Sit ting outdoors relaxing and nocking In the sun while we accustomed eye and ear to the unfamiliar sights and sounds around us Directly across the road were several imposing ornate stone buildings the city hall and post office Look ing up In the opposite direction we could see the stores of the main shopping area The build ings were grey stone with some ornamentation grey roofs and a rather overall heavy look This was relieved by graceful wrought Iron balconies on many and by the trees planted all al ong the sidewalks They were just coming into leaf ALL AROUND US course was the sound Spanish being spoken So were a bit startled to hear someone addressed us In Eng lish You Americans asked a gal who was an absolute dou ble for Imogene Coca And be lieve it or not her husband-ln- tow resembled Sid Caesar And the real comedians could have used the ensuing little scene verbatim for one of their sket ches Talking nonstop told us they hod flown over the night before were on a real bargain rate tour that their hotel room didnt have proper beds just thin mattres ses on the floor that she hadnt slept a wink for thirtysix hours and didnt expect or wont to sleep much for the two weeks they were spending in Spain and what they were planning to see and do that day and what were we planning and do that day etc etc eft I had thought I was an enthu siastic traveller but I seemed positively apathetic compared to was tired out just LISTENING to her Any way the remark about their hotel made me thankful our accommodation Imperfect it was Afterward we strolled up to toe main shopping area only to find everything closed up tight It was siesta time And Spanish dont fool when tbey take a siesta It lasts from to oclock Most of the tores then stay open till or 10 oclock HOWEVER WE window- shopped merchandise at tractive especially shoes and suede coats Prices on these are much lower than at home presses are priced about on a with ours Again as in peoplewise we could have been walking down a street In Toronto No really Spanish and A were the Utile kioska dotted all along the Pound out later these were standi lot lottery NEXT DAY WAS reserved of high hills tiered with red- sight seeing with tour group First place or in terest was the world famous museum and art gallery Had an excellent guide who took special pains to explain the masterpieces by Goya Vel asquez and El Greco scum is so vast a guide is a necessity NEXT HE TOOK us the Kings Palace to tour the reception rooms open to the public In all there are 2000 rooms in the palace It is a tourist attraction not easily forgotten I m sure the mast magnificent furniture tnpes- and glass chandeliers In the world have been collected here Every room is master piece of combining taste beau and priceless art treasures But surprisingly enough not in the Spanish style It Is French The walls of many of the rooms are papered with silk brocade and velvet Most magnificent room of all was the state din ing room where huge cry stal chandeliers shone down on a polished banquet table set with gold plate for OUR TOUR allowed us to glimpse tho narrow streets of Madrid s old town stopped briefly at its threshold the ancient Mayors Square the colonnaded and bordered now with boutiquestyle shops on and fashionable town houses above The build ings surrounding the Square all have wrought iron balconies which are often used to view events such as openair operas concerts etc still staged in the Square wending OUR way back to hotel we drove thru large park Other than on artificiallycreated lake the park consisted solely and com pletely of a wooded area Our guide told us people come from hundreds of miles around just see and enjoy those trees they are such a rarity in the countryside around Madrid And In times of drought which Is practically every sum mer no matter how scarce the water the trees are al ways watered Had luncb in the early after noon at the Spanish equivalent of a Frans restaurant just down the street from the hotel The bar beer was full of men standing and chatting an imatedly on their siesta 124 break Couldnt help wondering about their wives who might live in a Madrid suburb What a long lonesome day they must put in with husbands from 8 In the morning till 11 at night THAT EVENING we hod tickets to a night club call ed the En route there we passed several of the many beautiful illuminated fountains Enjoyed the flamenco dan cers at the club Tbey perform ed for nearly two boars The dances were so strenuous some of the dancers looked exhaus ted afterwards The roam was filled to capacity no space left for the guests to dance The evening was more like concert than our idea of night club but well worth while We were supplied with a program giving us the Interpre tation of each dance Every in Spain has Its own spec ial flamenco stylo costume and story A part of Spanish culture we didnt choose to see bull fights However several of our group did I dont think they enjoyed it much too AN EXPEDITION every body enjoyed however was our drive to tho most ancient city in Europe Toledo Over 200 years old the only people who live there now are its fa mous artisans who specialize In gold inlaid jewellery TO REACH Toledo w drove to miles over a brick road thru flat with hardly a shrub let alone a tree The overall effect woa a monotone of brown accented by the orangecoloured clay soil Passed by several tiny Span ish villages Houses were one storey whitewashed cub icles with two small windows an each side of the front door Narrow clay roods separ ated them and there wasnt a blade of grass or tree in sight In front of one village we saw a group of blackclad longskir ted women doing their family laundry in a large pool As we Toledo the U became more fertile look ing and the now slightly roll ing countryside had silverleaf ed olive orchards on the hill sides THEN WE SAW it A wall- town I could hardly be- it was real The cluster tiled roofs and girded about with the fortress wall roso up like a mirage ahead or us We crossed over river and enter thru heavy gates with turret- watch towers on either side Into the town we drove over the narrow cobbles toned roods thru the twisting streets up hill and down dale The cream coloured stucco threestoreyed houses crowded the roadside without benefit of sidewalks They were a colourful sight with their graceful wrought iron balconies spiling with flowers and greenery We paused In- cur meander to look thru the other side of town where on tho top of of Us high hills we en tered a most beautiful ral Once inside its massive portals vistas of white marble gold leaf and crystal chandel iers opened out into the centuries OUR SIGHTSEEING at an end down the precipit ous road we drove and out the gates at the bottom or the hill As they swung shut behind us we were leaving a dream world But Its one which the
