Honkers Winging North A Welcome Spectacle Yes It was a beautiful Easter weekend as no doubt everyone will agree even the majestic Canada goose thought so Ap proximately at am Easter Monday morning Harold Ben nett of R I Georgetown saw large flock of these birds winging their way northward Of course they wero heard honking first In the common Canada Goose Is second only to the swans It has a wing spread be tween and ft and ranges In weight from to 14 lbs On account of Its great size and excellent table properties it has probably been hunted as persis tently as any other game bird on this continent It is so wary sagacious and so difficult outwit that pursuit has always fascinated the keen sportsman and taxed his skill and his ingenuity more than any other game bird By fair means and foul this wonderful bird bagged by countless thousands over the years In spite of the murder onslaughts It has somehow managed to hold its own and under more enlfghtened game laws of today will prob ably materially increase in numbers V FORMATION On migration Canada Geese often assume the well known V shaped formation with the lea at the head From time to time during long flights change of leadership will take place familiar resonant honk honk of these geese in flight as the leader calls to his flock and they respond at frequent intervals never loses Its tic charm The old ganders know the way I and lead their trustful flocks by the straightest and safest route high in the air with the earth spread out below them like a map they follow no coast line no mountain chain and no river valley but direct- 1 ly onward over bill and valley river and lake forest and plain city town and country their course points straight to their summer homes Flying night or by day as circumstan ces require they stop only when necessary to rest and feed and then only in such places as their experienced leaders know to be safe i The Crce Indians at James Bay claim that the Canada Goose nest and raise their young from the south end of James Bay to Eskimo Point on Hudson Bay Of course they also nest and their young in the western marshes and oth er places south of Hudson Bay and James Bay In ending this about the Can ada I might say Its wonder ful to see them going north ag after such a steady winter that has Just passed CORNELIUS John Cornelius second from right with trophy winners Joe
