RECEIVE MAJOR ATHLETIC AWARDS Four special athletic wards were presented at the end of Georgetown District High School lint annual athletic ban quet May IB Give lett received two of them the FoUcni Awards as outstanding boy athletic of the year and Paul Award as graduating student with a senior athletic award who has achieved the highest academic standing Beside him Is Jane Girvan recipient of the Mary Patterson Award as outstanding girl athlete the year and at right Rick who received the McLaren Award as the student who has contributed most to the athletic program as a competitor or manager Clive Llewellyn Jane Girvan GDHS Athletes of the Year During the week ending May officers of the Ontario Pro vincial Police stationed at North Detachment worked a to tal of hours and patrol led miles on Provincial Highways County and Town ship Roads under their Juris diction Traffic violations result ed In charges being laid un der the Highway Traffic Act while an additional 48 warnings were issued Proceedings in Provincial Court Milton led to 124 convictions being registered Officers were called upon to investigate occurren ces during the day reporting period Included were thefts 1 break and enter stolen cars were recovered of which led to the apprehension of an es capee s investigations under the Liquor Control Act result ing in charges being laid ag ainst persons 1 sudden death investigation missing person complaint 2 domestic com plaints assault Investigation impaired drivers were Clive Llewellyn and Jane were named outstanding boy and girl athletes of the year at the first annual George town District High School Ath letic Banquet Tuesday Jane received the Mary Patterson Award from Mrs Patterson who is leaving the schools physical education department to become head of the guidance department This is a new award in tribute to her work In girls athletics The Award was pre sented to Llewellyn by lost terms winner Hugh Williams Two other major awards were presented at the conclusion of the presentations The McLaren Award presen ted annually to the student who has contributed the most to tho athletic program as an all round performer was won by Rick Chaplin McLaren for who the award was named was head of the Physical Education Department here for several years He made the presentat ion The Paul Legge Award an other new award this year honouring Paul 13 years of service to Georgetown Dis trict High School as teacher and coach was presented by him to Clive Llewellyn It will go annually to the graduating boy or girl who holds a senior athletic award and achieves the highest academic standing Awards also went to teams representing the school In golf cross country running volley ball football wrestling basket ball gymnastics badminton track and field table tennis skiing rugger soccer and field hockey Efforts of the cheer leaders were also recognized Frank CosenUno University of Western Ontario head coach who quarterbacked Hamilton Edmonton Eskimos and Toronto Argonauts of Canadian Football League bef ore joining the UWO staff last year advised the young athletes to continue to develop their ta lents to the benefit of country community and themselves Increasing the quality of human life should be the prime goal of education he sold In prefacing his definition of the role of athletics in education Principal Mike Furlong
