OUTUNE MINOR HOCKEY SUPPORT Legion Urges Concerned to Get Involved in Rate Dispute Following meeting of of flclals Sunday Brunch 120 Royal Canadian Legion Issued the following press release regar ding the recently Increased fees for Ice rental at the Memorial Arena Branch sponsors Kid Hockey which embraces four house leagues for boys It was at the regular monthly meeting in October with the late comrade Leslie M Clark In the chair that a decision was made that Branch 120 Royal Canadian Legion Georgetown would sponsor all kid hockey In town Alf Sykes was appointed chairman It was not the aim of the to produce champions or star hockey players although it was inevitable that there would be some players seen on N H L V games who had started in Saturday morning hockey at Georgetown Memorial Arena Basically the undertaking was to provide hockey for any boy with skates who wished to play Tie town fathers cooperated with the Legion in this very essential wintertime recreation for the boys In this district by donating Ice time or Saturday mornings with the stipulation that Ice scraping would be paid for by Branch 120 Each paid a season for accident insurance As the years passed by this arrangement continued and the Saturday morning hockey grew in size along with the town TOWN At one time ft became evident hat some expansion was needed so Ice time was purchased by the Legion on Tuesday evenings between the hours of 30 to 30 This was to cater to midget age boys All the while coaches managers and boys were having to leave their beds earlier as the number of hockey players in creased PLAYER FEE This arrangement continued until the season of 196869 when the cost or Ice lime was set at an hour To offset this the Branch Introduced a registration fee of per boy plus ft insurance When It was discovered the insurance was no longer valid the Branch assumed responsibility for not covered by OMSIP as dental treatment etc Now this season the rates are again raised to this time The Legion finds it hard to understand how the coat of operating the arena has in creased from zero to an hour for ice time in the short period of three years There must be a change In policy Either the town has been subsidizing the Branch over the years or there has been a change in policy The change came when the R Committee started to charge the 50 and now has Increased It to with a concession that ice time will be until HOW FAR There is a recommendation to next year committee that the rate should be increased to how far will this raising of prices go Last year the Legion looked after boys The Senior League for boys 16 and under included players on four teams and required minutes of Ice time per games the NHL for boys 14 and under had ISO boys on nine teams and played 35 minutes games American League 12 and under 192 boys on 12 teams 30 minute games and Junior A 180 players of 10 years old and younger on 12 teams playing 30 minute games Out of kids and there will most likely be more this year many have parents who are in a low income bracket and are finding it hard to outfit the boys with the equipment needed to play hockey Some have several boys playing now they could be asked to pay this increase fee On top of the cost of buying ice time the sponsoring Branch 120 pays out an average of annually for hockey sweaters and crests There have been remarks made about other communities where the fee to register Is to plus game but It should be pointed out that these boys enjoy three minute periods at stop watch time while with the number of boys in M H each boy is lucky to get minutes on the ice Perhaps it would be wise to remark here that surely the arena Is not a profit making organization but to provide a service to the community UP AT FIVE There are approximately volunteer workers participating in Saturday morning hockey Each sets his turn at rising at a m to do his shift at a m dressing the kids lacing skates coaching or referee and the commissioner of the league playing must also be on hand Perhaps the town could match this volunteer service by a more reasonable rate A word about Branch 120 It Is the largest service club In town if you can call it a service club but it is by no means the wealthiest you should see the mortgage Kid hockey is but one of its projects Soccer baseball Air Cadets mentally retarded Scout Cubs are a few of the Branchs The Branch Hall Is available to these organizations for free for their money raising projects The Branch has always been vitally interested in the Georgetown Hospital and gave a donation for the building when the appeal for donations went it Right now the Branch Is seeking to purchase Physical Therapy Equipment to replace the equipment the hospital Is using at this time A BREAK Since 1949 the Baby Clinic has been held at Branch twice a month For over years the Branch along with the town have en the young at heart with the firework display Over the years thousands of dollars have been raised by the Ladies Auxiliary for scholarship bur Track and field is a Legion project and although there is no track and field In this district as a Legion Branch we support It Provincial Command Is In in the mentally and to find out more about it are sending an official to Branch 120 which has been chosen a example for 120 has been working with this group for many years Besides all this the Branch is a high tax payer and has membership of over tax payers The Branch Is not cheap but feels the kids should be given break and all those concerned should become Involved in seeing they get their break Flying Antiques Part Of Upcoming Sky Show Brampton Flying Cubs all Canadian air show at its Victoria field Sunday September 12 will attract a lot of Georgetown in The air
