Page GEORGETOWN HERALD THURSDAY SEPT 1971 Halton Separate School Board Protests Decision The Halton County Separate School Board baa voiced Iti strong opposition to the recent Ontario Government decision not to extend financial aid to separate schools past Grade In a statement released last week the board described Premier Davis ducts ion unacceptable and educationally unsound I but did not threaten any further action It faulted the Ontario govern ment for contradicting Its own education policy by not extending equal educational opportunity to the provinces separate school students REASONS The board protest comes less than one month before the Oc tober provincial election Both the Liberals and New Democratic Party favour complete provincial support of separate schools The statement stressed educational and pedagogical reasons for the boards stand The decision to maintain this arbitrary cutoff half way through a secondary program is Incomprehensible In a continuous and integrated process of education How does a Separate school board sensibly plan and develop a currlcular learning experience Integrated with the students needs and progress when is denied the administrative power over the last onesixth of the program STATUS The statement makes brief mention of the constitutional status of separate schools noting Ontarios unique policy The separate schools are here by right they cannot be struck down they are educating Ontario children with public funds they should be able to offer an op portunity for education equal that In the other public schools UNFORTUNATE It is unfortunate that Ontario the wealthiest province In Canada la the only province which does not extend to its minority equal education op portunity with Us majority system Every other Canadian province with a publicly sup ported minority system allows that system to operate to the end of high school with no resulting fragmentation religious an tagonism or undue cost This Is the rehearsal In a sharp and encouraging contrast from a few seasons ago when a total cast of five or six people was difficult to find director heard 17 women and 11 men read for the six womens parts and
