Georgetown Herald A Dtvhlon of Home Company Umlttd Main Street South Georgetown Ontario WALTER C BIEHN page NOV IB EDITORIAL The Best We Can A mail bag letter from Councillor Joan Smith in this issue brings up a point for debate and a matter which con never be alt right or all wrong Mrs Smith comments on a news item from a council committee meeting regarding possible location of a metol products firm in Georgetown industrial area It quotes a resident as saying the firm would probably employ between and people when fully built Mrs Smith said that she had learned the following day that they will be offering only 10 jobs and informed the reporter of this Since the Herald thus knew the facts it is questioned why the Herald chose to print only the builder promises she says It is irresponsible of your newspaper to offer false hopes WecanshareMrs Smith concern if the Heralds news columns do not always reflect the facts But the Herald is in the position of reporting what is heard at a council meeting Timcandstafflimitalionsdonot Often Too Honouring an individual for his con tnbution to a community is often too late for him to get full appreciation and often unfortunately comes in the form of a posthumous tribute It is nice therefore to report an casion when the recipient is in good health and continuing his daily routine Such was the case with Canon Jim Maxwell whose church members at Steworttown and Hornby bonded together to give him a rousing party to mark his years as Anglican rector of the parish The months of planning and minute detail of the organizers and the enormous response from members of the parish spoke of the affection they have for their rector We are sure that this fine surprise party will give him renewed vigour to continue his ministry with the knowledge that his COMMENT allow an analysis of a discussion and further checking on the veracity of such news If this were to be attempted there would be very little news printed after council meetings for we would be in a constant flurry of checking and counter checking Such a system Is not perfect but it is the only way we can operate and relay municipal news to our readers If as Mrs Smith claims Inaccuracies are contained in statements made at a meeting arc open for correction The Mail Bag column of which she is making use is at everyone disposal And councillor or any citizen can appear at a subsequent meeting to make a correction or retraction which will be reported In the news columns In this case because of Mrs Smith concern the Herald reporter did try to contact the metal firm without sue cess so compiled a news item from the committee discussion There was certainly no intent to the news nor can we agree that the Herald is irresponsible as Mrs Smith claims work 15 appreciated not only by his own church people but by the community at large The Herald was also flattered recently when the Legion branch presented a merit award to the staff for publicizing Legion activities over the years This too was a surprise All members of the staff were invited to a civic dinner not knowing that the presentation was to be the highlight of the evening We would not be honest if we did not admit that it sent every stuff member home with a rosy glow to know that our weekly efforts at recording and reproducing the news is appreciated Like everyone we get our share of brickbats Such a compliment goes a long way softening some of the criticisms which the nature of our job entails A Matter of Business Now that the smoke has cleared and the Toronto Telegram has breathed Us last we can look back on some of the in consistencies which occurred When John Bassett first announced that he was folding his paper selling his mailing list to the Star and his machinery to the Globe it started a public con which soon entered the realm of the ridiculous There were those who would have the federal parliament investigate There were others politicians among them who would have the government subsidize the paper to keep it operating There were implications that it was a plot to comer the newspaper market in Toronto and give the Star a monopoly That the Star now has a monopoly in the afternoon newspaper field is evident Thai Mr was a shrewd businessman and salvaged what he could from a business which was losing money is also evident And we can see no reason for criticism of cither party In a democratic capitalistic society we have heard or no rule which soys any business must have competition If a clothing store is not profitable the owner must close it up If he can sell his stock and what goodwill he possesses too competitor there are no cries of monopoly Were the government to step in there would be a public outcry at spending tax money for private business The Telegram is no different THUMB ARE THUMB ARENT Recent years hove seen a sub stantial increase in I he number of people walking and hitch hiking on mtililane controlled act ess high ways and a wrack of clouds tearing across the sky But you won t hear a word of complaint from In the first place the Wind has blown the remainder of my annual cubic feet of leaves right off my front lawn and onto my neighbours And In the second this has been the most glorious autumn I can remember The foliage was eneffably beautiful and tasted longer than usual We were swimming right Into October On November 1st we entertained friends on the back lawn after a twomile walk through the hushed expectancy of a beech forest over stone walls that looked as though they had been built by the same chops who knocked together the pyramids and across rolling pastures that reminded Uttersweetly of the English downs Let dread winter do its The Lord or whoever runs Ihe weather department has given me a fall I will never forget Mind you take with a groin of salt Man Is a fallible creature and within a week 111 be cursing the enow getting my snow tires on too late trying to pry the garden hose out of the ice and wondering why ldidnt get my storm windows on during the glorious autumn I was raving about Man fallible indeed We are born equal but some of us become more equal than others We are bom fallible but some of us become more fallible than others I am content to be in the latter category If there anything that raises my hackles it is the person who Is infallible or thinks he Is Or she In the case of my wife For example you read about the way that Jaclde ex Kennedy has that poor Greek Aristotle Onasls tied up financially He made himself a billionaire but deep his first name and the wisdom It piles his marriage contract with her makes him look like a real hick who has come In contact wilh a very shrewd She is guaranteed a year for clothes I forget the other items but they re in the same vein Even my wire was appalled She couldnt spend it she said I merely raised one eyebrow But you agree that Aristotle is fallible The poll I leal experts arc Just about as fallible as they come Premier Davis would have a real battle on his hands in Ontario Joey Small wood would have some opposition but no real problem in The upset of the long entrenched Alberta govern ment was impossible Davis won walking In Joey got licked I think in and the longentrenched boys in Alia were turfed out The cops are fallible Hun dredH of them stood around with red faces when Borne silly young punk burst through their serried ranks and put a half Nelson on Premier Kosygin The mighty is fallible For the first time In the history of the United Nations the States got a real jolt in ego on the admission of China vote Its fallibility was showing even more blatantly when it per in the face of world opinion in the great nuclear test off Alaska Bul this is the way of the world If man were infallible he would have no need for a god Ihe earth would be crawling with automatons and life would be very dull If weather forecasters were infallible for instance there d Wed be able to batten down for a storm Instead of having the roof blown off when they predicted light winds We d be able to wear heavy jackets Instead of shivering like a dog vomiting razor blades when I hey forecast hot weather and the temperature was 34 No fun No variety I come a long way from my opening words about the beautiful autumn we vc had But there method In my madness Man is fallible Maybe lust think we vehadabeautiful loll I could quite easily wake up tomorrow morning discover that it was the middle of September and that we d just had a 4foot foil of snow and that the whole thing hod been a dream I hope not but I m not discounting the possibility In the Matt Bag Jobs Not Councillor Says Is Regan Crescent Dear Mr Editor If Venture Mel a craft of Weston docs locate in Georgetown they will
