asphalt plants operating at various locations in the district Each has been surveyed and abatement achieved CLEANEEtFUELS Through cooperative programs Industrial com mercial or institutional con versions to cleaner fuels have been completed Abatement programs arc being prepared for industrial operations which range from coffee roasting to cement batching Surveys of industrial and commercial sources are con tinuing on a routine basis and abatement programs developed based on the results of the surveys Ministers Orders were issued to the nine following companies for the purpose of controlling air contaminants The Ministers Orders arc being replaced by the Directors Orders since the Environmental Protection act of 1971 went into force lit Refinery Gulf Oil Canada Regent Refining Canada Ltd Shell Canada Ltd All the above companies arc required to control emission of malodorous and sulphurous gases by phased programs which extend to December 31 CONTROL ODOURS 5 and Company Acton is required to control odorous emissions by January 1 Domtar Fine Papers Georgetown Is required to control odours from waste water lo goons by July 1972 Hercules Canada Ltd Burlington Is required to control odorous emissions by June l Lake Ontario Steel Whitby Is required to control the emission of dust and fumes from its electric arc furnaces by December Canada Ltd Oakvllle was to control the emission of odours Monsanto completed the necessary controls and the other eight are com plying with the Ministers Order and taking steps to improve their controls A number of sources have surveyed and Air Management officials have prepared reports These include among others General Smelting Lake view Generating Station St Lawrence larch St Lawrence Cement enco Robson Lang Leathers and Coll is Leather Each of these companies has a different problem requiring on Individual approach But more than half have already submitted abatement programs for the lpprovol of the Director OFFENSIVE Air Management Branch personnel have spent a good deal of time dealing with waste disposal problems from farm operations The main concern Is one of offensive odours which arise from Intensive animal farming such as piggeries poultry farms and veal calf operations Expert advice has been ob tained from the Ontario Department of Agriculture and Food to assist in reviewing specific situations A voluntary code of practice for farms and disposal of animal waste is easing this problem as farmers revise their operations And Branch personnel are still working with the Department of Agriculture
