bidding without two defensive tricks Such rules are fine for a beginner but as you I cam more about the game you will learn that these rules do not always apply The one I wish to write about this week Is Never give declarer a ruff and a stuff I agree with this rule but not with the never in front It is a very poor play to allow declarer to ruff in one hand and discard a loser for the other However it can also be a very effective play for the defense provided that declarer has no losers to discard Here is Just such a hand from the Acton Bridge Club South dealt with neither side vulnerable NORTH S D873 since only one In dummy A diamond return would not work If West had the ace he should have played it at trick three instead of leading his last spade A club return into dummys best suit was far from attractive So East led his last spade deliberately giving declarer a ruff and a No matter what declarer did now he must lose a trump trick If he discards from his hand West will ruff with the Jack and if declarer ruffs high Easts ten of hearts will become a trick At the table declarer look the best chance of ruffing high and trying to drop Jack- ten of trumps When this did not work he conceded down one Last weeks winners at the Acton Bridge club were Bill and Gloria Coals tie Mrs Lillian Lawrence and Mrs Harry and Jack Greer H2 CAK 10976 HJ2 DtJ 10963 C432 SOUTH S JOB NORTH SOUTH EAST PASS 3D PASS EAST CJ5 H ALL PASS Opening lead king spades Wests may seem shakey to rubber bridge players but not to duplicate players EastWest are not vulnerable and West does have a few points Duplicate players will just In case their side can find a part score contact on a sacrifice Perhaps North should pass but he does have two quick tricks and a singleton so he Introduces three clubs South temporizes with a bid of three diamonds This bid is forcing and shows at least one stopper in diamonds If North has spades stoppers they could play In no trump North supports hearts and South carries on to game After opening tend declarer Is quite happy It looks like three spade losers if the defense cashes them and declarer can claim the balance However the defense had other Ideas On the spade king East signals encouragement by playing the eight West continues with the ace and hen the six or spades East won be third round and took stock A heart return to cut down diamond ruffs did not look Lions Share Their Cash Georgetown Lions put into community work and selected charities last season according to their trust account balance sheet released in a recent Issue of Communicat the
