Georgetown Herald A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Main Street South Georgetown Ontario THURSDAY JUI 12 1D73 GO TRAINS When Are They Coming With barely six months left in the year time is running out for inauguration of 1973 GO train service between Georgetown and Toronto GO trains are supposed to be coming but precisely when remains something of a mystery Extension of the commuter service was announced more than a year ago and was one of the reasons attributed for booming real estate values in this com Even now as the debut of the service lags real estate values are softening It must be that a great many potential commuters expected to be rid their cars by now and are more cautious about making a move from the environs of Metro Toronto It was the original intention to have GO trains linking the Georgetown Brampton and Bramalea areas with Toronto by this summer Even a firm August date was established That s gone by the board of course and so has a possible starting date in September Even talk about a possible November beginning of the commuter service has given way to rumors about a December startup Any further projections will place the startup of GO service in the new year Much if not all of the delay in startup has been laid at the feet of producers of train equipment Its not being produced fast enough to meet projections Perhaps in Georgetown some clue about an impending start will come when work begins on passenger facilities at the CNR property So far that hasnt started either But the politicians continue to talk about the extended GO trains and don they always keep their promises Come on Queen s Park lets get GO Name Game Needs More For the past three weeks The Herald has been carrying an ad vertisement calling for suggestions for a new name for North Halton under regional government The area involved In this portion of regional government is Georgetown Acton and Esquesing Township Regional government with the new year with elections scheduled this fall So far response has been slow We would like to see more suggestions and perhaps even a greater variety Right now is the most popular name put forward but there are others such as Wildwood and Tall Pines There has even been a suggestion for the name Kennedy after the family man who gave his first name to Georgetown no one in Georgetown so far has suggested an Acton appellation There must be other ideas kicking around in the heads out there The Herald will continue to carry the advertisement please note this is not a contest just a bid for name suggestions ana we hope more residents will participate When it comes time to select choices for balloting names put forward will be considered Campers and Canoeing The Ontario Safety Leagues Canoe Camping Demonstration Unit is in full swing in Algonquin Park Headlined by trie in known Canadian canoeist Omer Stringer and assisted by Rob Dawson a former park ranger programs are being presented in the campgrounds and summer camps throughout the month of July The proper use of canoes is demonstrated and spectators are given the chance to try their hand at paddling with the assistance of the skilled teachers Camping equipment tripping techniques and care of the environment are all discussed with those attending the programs Every Wednesday a canoe outing is conducted jointly by park naturalists and Ontario Safety League personnel when canoeing techniques can be put into practice and the wonders of nature enjoyed with the assistance of professional supervision The programs offered by the Ontario Safety League in Algonquin are free to everyone and jointly sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and the Canadian National Sport Show Anyone wishing to learn more about camping canoeing and outdoor vacations is invited to attend A schedule of the League s daily programs in Algonquin is available at the east or west entrance to and at all the camp grounds A Measure of Worth Owning a piece of real estate can be a good investment Newcomers to Georgetown often express amazement about the high cost of especially if they have just left an area of lower and more stable prices But consider this piece of news In New York City the tax commission has assessed all taxable real estate at 38 billion Thats an increase of more than million over the previous valuation Three centuries ago Dutch colonists paid the Indians 24 in beads yet for the island of Manhattan The morals there are two of them are obvious A piece of dirt is always worth more than you think or you can always hold out for a better price Hi A telephone bill was J bating The mavnr explained the lolal included the palm office his office lomrnittee room and the rout office 1 in
