Comment Can Contact Centre Handle Emergency The local is planning to start a phone service in the fall for people to call In for help with their problems be they big or small One of the questions asked by a number of people Interested In the service Is will it be able to cope with people In extreme situations who are contemplating taking their own lives It Is no idle question for similar phone centres in other communities are confronted with those very Droblems We don like to talk about suicide understandably But to avoid the question when we are faced with it can be dangerous Doctors have some times suggested that people be kept in hospital for their own safety only to have relatives refuse on the grounds that It t happen in their family Unfortunately events sometimes prove the relatives wrong Even Individuals who may be thinking about taking their Uvea are reluctant to seek help to be open about those thoughts with someone in their family or a doctor or a clergyman Distress centres have found that women are more likely to call than men That may be partly a reflection of the fact that mora women than men attempt suicide but just as many men go through with it By keeping their feelings to themselves the men denied themselves avenues of helo It used to be possible to show that suicide rates were higher in towns than In the country higher for the old than the young higher for men than women for pro tea tan than for catholics But more and more young people are making the attempt And clergymen who have served in the area have had the press on that if anything the rates are higher in the small com muni ties we have here than In the cities Extreme loneliness seems to be one of the factors that drives people on but you can be just as lonely in a small town or even in a family as in a city People s motives are very complex and there are few easy solutions to their problems Those who are deeply depressed may need professional help But a prominent psychologist who has studied suicide suggests that many people who have attempted It were simply unhappy and In our society we are unused or unable to deal with emotional Tranquil Lien may help us to dull the symptoms but they won t help us to face the problem With the book of we have to learn that there is a time to weep and to mourn as ell as to Laugh and dance The gospel itself has no simple answers though it does affirm a hope and a value to life that many have lost The first step however Is to stop treating suicide as a taboo and If such feelings plague us to seek help GEORGETOWN HERALD
