Georgetown Herald A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Ontario RICHARD CAMERON Publisher c GEORGETOWN HERALD Thursday October J HALLOWEEN Lets End The Treating With the cost of living as high as it is 1973 would be a good year to call a halt to the widespread custom of Halloween treating You know the custom Children get dolled up in a kaleidoscope of dress and color and whisk about the streets banging on doors and looking for handouts Most of us comply And because the days of those little houses out back are gone kids have more time to think about treating and less about tricking But cost is only one thing to consider Halloween falls at the darkening time of the year where days arc shorter and weather is apt to be than ideal Masked children are a hazard to motorists and to themselves And every year some of them fall prey to those persons with sick minds who try to discourage treating b resorting to doctored goodies such as straight pins in apples Every Halloween children are urged to be careful watch out for traffic check the candy and such before eating and get home at a reasonable hour This year parents why not support the idea of house parties or school parties If some Halloween custom must be observed could we not limit it to the campaign for funds Then at least children are learning to be useful to work to help others Treating on Halloween just teaches them to be greedy Garbage Energy Answer It is an ironic fact of life that most garbage requires energy to iroduce and of ten to dispose of but ittle garbage in return is used to produce energy Garbage was in the news again last week in Georgetown and where the talk is about sanitary we wonder what is so sanitary about a place where garbage is buried landfill sites and their use Landfill sites simply are places where garbage is placed whether it is shredded compacted or just plain dumped with or without materials removed Georgetown is preparing to develop a new dumping site that will overlook the Credit River It could become a necessary spot for dumping of garbage from many other points within the new regional municipality But that is not the point The point is why can garbage be put to work to produce could make the matter a provincial problem because garbage goes beyond municipal borders although municipalities being left to dial with it It might even be a federal problem but the British North America Act is rather vague about it Simply stated if it is known that incinerated garbage has caloric value then hat alone should be enough impetus to start the cogs whirring to bring about plants that can use garbage to generate steam for heating and electricity for lighting Garbage available in North America must exceed any known oil deposits of the Middle alone in terms of power potential Who says there is an energy crisis Excitement Of The Shoot Mistaken targets are usually associated with the use of high rifles and the hunting of larger game The Ontario Safety League reminds duck hunters that their record is far from clean in this regard There was the case of a canoeist who had to use paddles to shield himself as he was repeatedly pelted with bird shot by a pair of duck hunters in spite of his warning shouts another instance a man was blasted out of a blind by a fellow hunter in the excitement of the shoot The Ontario Safety League claims the answer to avoiding such absurd and unnecessary accidents lies in the mind of the man holding the gun Never let the excitement of the hunt distort your judgment and jeopardize a human life Follow strictly the rules of safe shooting sit close together in a blind shoot your own birds and never shoot from a powered boat unless it is securely anchored in a blind ECHOES FROM THE PAST Georgetown Utile Theatre said driving is still fun The importance of studying transportation problems Is underlined by fact lhat more than one fifth of all money spent on urban activity Is on Iran cation This Is defined as the movement of people and goods In one study Toronto is compared with Cleveland In terms of flexibility in proving existing Iran systems In Cleveland with 57 separate small cities having their own little departments planning something big Is Impossible There is little borrowing power in such a fragmented system By contrast Toronto will have a new monorail or comparable transit system within few years as a result of only a few major authorities initialing it says that Toronto has the best transportation system In North America and possibly In the world He studied systems in several countries for this special His interest In Iran sportation is broad and penetrating He dismisses colorful a I rears and personal rapid transit systems depicted In Getting Around as very interesting to look at but not practical for today He says major cities must concentrate on Im proving access for their motorists and riders This Is accomplished he says by spreading the traffic load geographically rather than leaving it concentrated He used as an example Toronto subway entrance that absorbed Queens Park em ployees within 15 minutes every day The staggering of employees quilting time helped to reduce peaK loads at this station Boynton said that a master plan for traffic flow is needed by big cities In order to achieve high levels of Park Bureau Of The raid Some people gulped a while ago to see
