with daughter lira A C Reinbardt manages shop first spotted the dog that morning its worried pacing back and forth along she said had by midday worn a path In the snow Mrs then phoned Hills Animal Control Services who arrived at with a and hipwaders Finally the dog apparently a cross between a black and tan and a boxer was ferried across the ley river by the HHACsJoeKlrleyandW Green and placed in the services van The dog will remain in the Llmehouse animal pound for hours and if not claimed put up for adoption or disposed of Recreation director called for icing Members of town council have taken strong exception to plans to operate a sum mer hockey school In the new Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena despite the fact that the operator of the hockey school baa already begun advertising for it Councillor Rum Miller led the attack of the hockey school proposal Monday night during committee of the wholes review of a recreation committee report outlining the hockey school setup time can I recall a decision was very annoyed when I saw signs at the arena advertising this hockey school before It had even come before this council If were going to have summer ice In the arena how much is It going to cost What are our rates How was this particular operator selected If you ask me it looks like were being forced into this thing Following an hourlong debate based on those questions posed try Councillor Miller committee of the whole decided to refer the matter of putting ice In the new Guelph Street arena for the summer back to general administration committee to find out the definite costs involved in operating the rink all summer long Councillor Dick who chairs the general administration committee explained to councillors that recreation director Doug calculated that Ice could be main tained In the arena throughout the summer for approximately That would cover he said hydro lighting water and staff required to operate the rink from July I to September The additional revenue resulting from the added summer ice time would be In the neighborhood of noted Councillor Of that a Oat charge would be paid by the operator of the proposed hockey school In return for that the school would be given ice time from July to August Monday through Friday from am to noon and from to p Besides the revenue from the hockey school Mr Coilison also predicts that Ice time could be rented ia the local figure skating club power skaters occasional groups and the public during open skating times Mr estimates explained Councillor that to percent of the operating costs of the arena could be recovered through Ice rentals know commented Councillor Miller Were Just taking the first who comes along He also noted that the minor hockey support group in Georgetown was upset at the hockey schools setup They have expressed fears he said that the groups annual fall hockey clinics which help provide operating funds for the towns minor hockey association would suffer because of the summer schools operation They feel they are going to get hit both ways First they paid for the arena through their taxes Now they have to pay for it a second time through possible increased hockey fees because of the possible drop In clinic registrations The old arena he added pays for only IB percent of Its costs during the summer because of Its Inability to provide summer Ice Public skating hours continued Coun cillor would complement the hours for public roller skating taking place in the old Georgetown Memorial Arena this sum mer Thus the public would have an op portunity to both skate and roller skate Councillor Morrow strongly defended the recreation directors decision to maintain the Ice In the Gordon arena through this coming summer at least He pointed out that the facilities of the new arena specifically two CO horsepower com pressors had been Included with the intent to provide summer ice It would be utter nonsense not to put this million dollar facility to full use this summer We have to make maximum use of the arena In order to get the maximum revenue out of It Anvbodv who that this new complex be shut down until fall is Just not thinking Weve got ogee it operating Then well get the figures on how much It costs to operate It during a normal summer Then and only then can we properly decide whether or not to use it In future summers Moat of the criticism of the plan for the summer hockey school was aimed not at the Idea of providing summer ice but at the tact that the goahead for both summer Ice and the hockey school had been given by the towns recreation department without referring to council for its feelings Maybe theres someone else Interested In running a hockey school here whos willing to pay for the summer We Just dont Gibbons confusing the minor hockey school Hes damned if be does something and hes damned If he doesnt said Councillor Levy I think the recreation director should be commended for taking the initiative la seeing that the arena Is used to Its fullest capacity Councillor Ernie Sykea didnt share his outlook however I think It was high handed of the recreation director to go ahead without getting approval from this council or without even making a presentation to the com ml tee The general administration will likely carefully study Mr Colllsons recom mendations at next Mondays committee meeting Meanwhile signs advertising the hockey School this summer In the Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena are springing up throughout Georgetown Either the Joseph Gibbons Public School Is going to have to go or the Joseph Gibbons Park will Confusion over the location of the two similarly named facilities has prompted town council to consider renaming a number of town parks in Wards 3 and Basically the confusion la a matter of location The Joseph Gibbons Park Is located in the east end of Georgetown while the school bearing the same name Is located a fair distance away In the west end of town Councillor Morrow explained that reshuffling of the names being con sidered by the recreation committee T put them In the same area Parents approve of sex film About curious concerned parents and educators crowded into Georgetown District High School gymnasium Monday night to see the notorious controversial sex film that wasnt There was a general feeling of relief among the audience after viewing Sexuality and Communications a dialogue between a doctor and wife team discussing marital problems centered around pregnancy and sex The discussion period following conveyed a sense of What was all the fust about Michael Furlong principal of the high school noted the enthusiasm of the audience Its an emotional thing that brought the parents out tonight Weve got nearly people all concerned about what their children are being taught about sex Yet when we had open bouse and invited parents to see what new we had introduced to the curiculum we had eight parents one night and only the next He went on to say that many youngsters are not receiving any kind of guidance at home and If they didnt at school they were out of luck The Urn has not been shown yet In GDHS but Mr Furlong sees nothing offensive about its contents The majority of the viewers expressed similar sentiments and several addressed favorable comments to the panel Ken Campbell chairman of the Renaissance Committee Mrs Betty Fisher chairman of Concerned Parents of Georgetown Jack Richardson Ed co ordinator for the Halton Board of Education and Lionel bead of the Boys Phys Ed program at M Robinson High School In Burlington where the film Is being shown to Grade 13 and 13 students Mr Richardson felt it was unfortunate the audience had to view the film out of context as ho explained the film is lesson In a 30lessan series on Family life Parents are advised of each segment of the course and allowed to choose whether or not the child should attend Furthermore the students are free to leave at any time during the sessions If any part Is embarrassing or offensive He asked viewers to keep an open mind and to remember to think two levels when assessing the contents We must view it as and also through the eyes of the young people who will be learning from It He said that sex education should Ideally take place In the home but lack of Information on the part of the parents leads him to believe that a sex education program for parents would be an ideal approach to the problem Eva Sanson a wife and mother from Acton expressed strong opinions neither for no against the film but against the attitude of parents and educators toward the reproductive system Does Ken suggest perhaps that our body is the creation of God but the sex organs are the work of the she queried have never heard any parent about the teaching of the system or the digestive system or the respiratory system These are in fact as much a part of your body as the reproductive system and every bit as subject to emotions In their function She added she not intimidated by any knowledge her children may acquire In or out of school She noted she cannot lead their lives for them nor protect them from the unpleasant I believe that knowledge in itself Is not evil It Is ignorance that breeds fear mistrust and prejudice Another member of the audience suggested that if Ken Campbell had any kind of communication with his daughter be would have known the film was going to be shown at school as letters were sent home to the parents advising them John a Georgetown parent thought the film was very good taste and worthwhile for the senior high school level I hope when telling my kids about the facta of life I can do it in as casual and composed a manner as the couple on the film Don Long a former high school teacher commented The socalled experts in the film have made statements Indicating what is normal What Is normal Normal la only relative to everything else I think Ive discovered tonight Im abnormal He saw nothing else objectionable about the presentation Another parent who wished to remain anonymous said the fight could go on forever and nothing will ever be solved U we are looking for a film that will please everybody we will have to wait til we go to heaven No human being will ever produce perfection and please everybody Have you watched television lately What our youngsters are subjected to on TV Is fax beyond what we saw here tonight Many people came here tonight ex peeling to see a dirty movie All were sur prised and disappointed All children will do what their parents did whether right or wrong So we might as well give it to them now while we stlD have them and have in fluence over them Instead of waiting til they are out in the world and have to find out for themselves Ken Campbell admitted that the film is not pornographic It la be said en excellent production technically but parents should be Informed especially since Grade 12 and 13 students range in ages from is to IS He doubted whether It was appropriate for the level it geared to The discussion went on until 11 Brian guidance counsellor for Acton High School students summed up the discussion with his opinion My job Is to help kids sort out these problems But Judging from the rate of Illegitimate pregnancies alcoholic end drug problems we haven been very successful so far What we need now is to look at the whole picture park In the east end he noted the club and council agreed that it should be named In memory of the former mayor of Georgetown the late Joseph Gibbons Later when a new school was built in the Moore Park area the board of education decided to name It in memory of the seme gentleman There was no recommendation or approval from this council that it should be named that Councillor Sykes pointed out Thus the onus of clearing up any confusion rests with the board of education he added Councillor Hvde managed to throw a bit of I told you so Into the debate when he recalled that when the naming of the park was originally before council It not a unanimous choice to call it Joseph Gibbons Park At that time It waa my contention that the park In the east end should be named Moore Park If the parks name la changed I would strongly recommend that It be named that to avoid any further confusion The matter of the naming of the park has been turned over to the recreation committee for further study Dale Carnegie course available to Georgetown worldfamous Dale Carnegie begin In the Georgetown area We are bringing the course to our community became we feel It la in the In terest of public service Mr for the Aquatic Arts Town council Monday night became embroiled in a brief debate over what toe new Indoor swimming pool adjacent to the Georgetown District High School should be named The wide ranging and occasionally very bitter debate at one point centred on renaming the Georgetown high school Itself But when all the discussion had died down the new pool finally and officially named the Georgetown Indoor Pool That waa the original recommendation from the recreation advisory committee which suggested to council That the name of the indoor pool In Georgetown be the Georgetown Indoor Pool Councillor Ernie Sykes taking what became a very firm stand on the subject sarcastically commended the recom It certainly shows a tremendous amount of Imagination Im certainly not downgrading the committee by saying they However It seems to me they really didnt look beyond themselves when it came to coming up with a name for the pool He noted that In light of the high terras were throwing around such as facility and aquatic supervisors I would suggest hat the new pool be named the Georgetown Centre for the Aquatic Arts Later presenting a motion to that Councillor pointed out that a number of new recreational facilities in Toronto and even Bramalea are being this new facility he said Lets not be league when it comes to naming Lets call it something that can all take pride In He said the pool should be given a title with meaning Councillor Em Hyde commented that If names with or without meaning were to be considered by council the board of education should be asked by the town to reconsider the name of the Georgetown high school Georgetown and the Immedlal large part of Halton Hills The suggestion to look into renaming Uw high sclioojbowQver did not receive strong support from council Councillor Dick commented that the committee was merely trying to make it as simple as possible Its just a name nothing particularly exciting Only two members of council Councillors and Roy Booth voted against the motion to name the pool as recommended by the recreation committee Guelph mall stalled A new Guelph Street mall will have to wait until the town planner considers the commercial requirements for the area Proposals made by Cherrytree Develop ments would provide a mall which would Include a Shoprite store between the Beaver Store and Masson Motors Members of the planning board the need for further commercial In the area due to present traffic along the twolane section of Street Sewers are presently being Installed for service to the mall at the expense of the developer The application as it stands will rezone he land from Industrial to general com suitable for stores The developers did not have any concrete plans for the plaza regarding the types of stores but plan to in clude the Shoprite store for which land has already been severed The planning board considered the am plication to and amend the official plan of Georgetown premature until a report from the town planner has been received for further study by the committee outlining the commercial requirement for the area 50 for councillors The towns finance and personnel Committee Is going to take a second look at a recommendation town treasurer Harry Henderson that councillors receive up to per day to pay tor Incidental expenses in curred while representing the town at con ferences conventions and seminars At present elected representatives from Hills have ail expenses besides and registration such as food transportation paid for when receipts are provided The treasurer has mended that Instead of having councillors Your Morning Smile They say love Is blind ft most be true there has never been a shortage keep track of their receipts a blanket per day amount be given The finance and personnel committee In reviewing its policies In connection with convention and seminar expenses further recommended to council that the figure be raised to per day But that did not sit well with many councillors Councillor Morrow noted that the region provides no such flat per diem rate for its councillors and thus the town should not To that Councillor Lea Duby replied Our policy should be made relative to what other municipalities are doing not to what the region Is Councillor Harry Levy firstly believing that the suggestion was to compensate councillors for time lost from their Jobs stated Some councillors here end up losing money from their bread and butter their job salaries by representing unto oiro conventions They should be compensated The motion however explained Coun cillor Miller was actually to eliminate the necessity of councillors having to keep track of their receipts The matter was referred by committee of the whole back to the personnel and finance committee for a further look At the root of the problem Getting soaked on dryers Councillor Ernie Sykes got down to the oots of the high priced hair dryers problem Monday night when he questioned a committee report recommending he purchase of hair dryers for use In the Georgetown and Acton swimming pools What kind of hair dryers could possibly coot each Sykes The only kind used to are the ones Councillor Dick Howitt explained that the figure was a maximum amount Its likelybe said that by ordering 11 hairdryers at same time the price could drop con siderably The dryers will be used In womens change rooms In the towns two new Indoor swimming pools They wllldirectajetof hot air In much the same way noted Councillor as hand dryers do to dry girls and women hair Six will be Installed in the Georgetown pool facilities and five In Acton They had been Included in the contract for the Georgetown pool but not in the Acton contract noted Mayor Tom Hill Bumps and grinds A rear
