Canadian Wrestling Champion in the lb class Eric woo the Canadian Championship this past weekend In Vancouver For Eric the honor of being a Canadian Champion provides fitting climax to a highly satisfying and successful wrestling campaign He did not wrestle or last year as be was attending school in Northern Ontario However on his return to Georgetown tills year coach Lew Martin expressed optimism about Erics chances of gaining wrestling If all things went as planned and of course barring injury In all the tournaments In which be wrestled Eric completely dominated his opponents In two tournaments In Montreal and Burlington he was named Host Valuable Wrestler and his classy style of wrestling drew envious comments from both bis op ponents and their coaches Eric won All- Ontario laurels In the ISO lb class but dropped down to his optimum weight for the Ontario Junior Freestyle Wrestling Championships held several weeks ago in Toronto His victory at that tournament paved the way for his appearance In the Canadian Championships Eric was under no as be headed for Vancouver He expected that be would perform up to par and would hopefully pick up a medal However it was really the ex perience of competing win top calibre wrestlers some with university training and some who bad competed In terna that loomed as the biggest price As with the Ontario competition Erics wrestling proved an unhappy experience to his opponents and no doubt taught them U soma invaluable lessons Eric had six matches all victories three on Friday and three on Saturday He was ipuabed to the time c defeated Leo Raines the AllOntario Champion in the 123 lb class In his second match Eric came to Sips with Vera the Canada Winter Gold medalist A CBC crew televising the event Interviewed and hailed Mm as the obvious choice to win his class Eric noted with humor that at this point he was totally Ignored This all changed however after his vie- over Eric was besieged by coaches from the University of British Columbia Simon Western and to name a few ail at to Induce him to attend their school Ap parently more than an education was dangled before him Their pleas were to no avail as Eric had already made his choice but It must have been an amusing sidelight for him all the same team According to Eric be will have to himself again at the camp if be wants represent Canada In the World Cham pionships to be held in Bulgaria Prior to the Again this is a singular honor aa only the top wrestlers from across Canada have been Invited Its been quite a year for Eric and there are possibly more
