busy week for the wononegameandUedanolher GDHS Junior and Senior while the Seniors won one soccer Rebels The Juniors game and lost another The Ontario Outdoors Smelt down ByBobOIUvkr Member Outdoor Writers of Ontario Smelt fishing not been as good as was expected in the Lake Ontario regions It got off to a slow start and did not turn up the quantities of Smelt that were caught in other years However this week could show me wrong on this as the fish might come In yet Some fishermen already know that the Coho Salmon follow the Smelt and Alewlfe In close to shore as these small fish come up the rivers to spawn In the spring time With this In mind many are trolling the mouth of the big rivers where the Smelt runs occur In the hopes of catching one of these fighting game fish The Coho can then be caught near the surface on lures that resemble the or Smelt and trolled Just under the surface with an eye peeled for signs of schools of being chased to the surface by foraging Salmon or even Rainbow Trout This should spell action for any fisherman In the areas as these gamesters run in huge schools Eventually someone will find the life pattern of these fish and learn how to get down to them with the style of gear These areas and patterns will probably show the home of the bait fish on which they feed NOW THAT A SMELT This very large Smelt was caught this past week in Burlington Its so large It could almost be called a freak In line with the news there will be a seminar In the Port Credit Arena on the north side of Lakeshore road This Is put on by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Zones of anglers as the minis try Intends to stock them The well known Peter will be there ss he Is now the Ontario representative for the Big John Co and will demonstrate this method of fishing the Great Lakes Alan of the MONR will give a talk on project and the meeting will be open to discussion Theworkshopwllllajttlllabout3pm dont let the long session deter you from going We have finally got the ageold malaise called Cabin Fever beat Spring IS here and everyone is doing their own thing as well they should Just dont let It break any laws and everyone can our province with Its many opportunities The Terra Conservation Authority will be open on the long weekend of May 13 and the camping areas will be ready to accept those who wish to get out without too far Gate fees will be and camping will be the same as last year per unit I feel It would be a good time to head for the Albion Hills area for some of the elusive Brown Trout that are said to be In the River there I sure hope people remember what I said about the late season opening on Lake for Walleye Well known areas for Walleye are the falls known as Falls Buckhorn Falls riversthatrunintoGeorglanBay I would recommend the use of a No a or No 6 size short shanked hook with 4pound test line The Spring Walleye is a rather timid fish and is Hook a worm that is In the best of shape and put the hook through the nose only NOT THE COLLAR In this way you will have a worm with a more natural look ABlbavesaidbeforetryltbeforeyouscoff When not If you catch a Walleye if It has a tag you keep the fish or record the tag number If you release the fish and mention the release when reporting the sice and weight of the fish to the ministry of natural resources Those caught in Georgian Bay are eligible for entry In a contest cosponsored by the ministry and he Georgian Bay Anglers and Hunters Club Send all the Information to District Manager MONR Mldhurst Ontario A draw will be made and a prize awarded to the sender of that tag number The season on my own personal favourite fish the Bass will open as the last season this year again along with Muskle on the or of June depending on where you fish for Mr or his cousin the Bass Then all we will have to look forward to Is the closlngoflheseasons Inbetween these times nothing but great times in ONTARIO OUTDOORS Seniors however once again proclaimed their supremacy In the annual Lord Elgin Soccer Tournament In Burlington on Saturday The Juniors week was highlighted by the of Ken I the Juniors tied I erdue In a fast paced that featured exciting at both ends of the itch Ken Flynn scored the I me Georgetown goal In what Jack Brown described i an excellent team effort This past Monday the completely out classed General Wolfe Juniors if and Ken latched all the Rebels ers This six goal per must rank as one of he best individual scoring efforts ever In high school The game was never in as far as Georgetown concerned and the score have gone higher had the pitch been In better shape The steady drizzle throughout Monday made footing treacherous and made feat even more remarkable The Seniors came up with a i appointing performance as they dropped decision to Perdue anthers at Perdue High Although Perdue Is one of the soccer lowers In the area it seemed to Tom Beer that his learn vent into the match over confident and did not really egln to work at their game mill it was too lato Perdue getting to the boll quicker ind controlling play longer and thus an lead to put the game out of reach On Monday It was a different story for the Senior as they controlled play In spite of poor pitch conditions and a steady drizzle and played an aggressive headstip game to knock off Blakelock Gary MlUerandTohy Pachecowerc the goal getters for the Seniors This past Saturday the Senior won Division A at the Lord Elgin Annual tournament for the third successive year Twenty- four teams from across the province competed In the three divisions wltb the cham pionship finals being played at Bronte Shell Park Iroquois Park and Optimist Park Aldershot Tigers won the B division crown while White Oaks B team took the C division title Georgetown defeated Wilfrid of Hamilton in the opening game with Ian and Ed Patcraon scoring the GDHS goals The second game almost spelled the end of Georgetowns hopes as the score stood at at the end of regulation time The Rebels took the contest on the basis of winning the penalty shot shoot out The finals pitted Georgetown against the team from Midland and in some quarters before the tournament began It was felt that Midland would be the eventual winners Georgetown won the game and the title 10 in overtime Ian Syme again provided the scoring punch Unfortunately for the Senior Rebels their untimely loss to Perdue on Thursday may have cost them a berth In the OFSSA tournament which decides which team advances on to All- Ontario play There Is a slim chance- me may slip In but this wont be decided until later this week The Juniors because of their onewin onetie and oneloss record to not qualify for the OFSSA tournament BUSINESS DIRECTORY OPTOMETRISTS II CHIROPRACTORS OPTOMETRIST L M games referees had let the contest get out of hand but he felt his players let their emotions get the better of them and didnt play up to potential As he stated U hey had stuck to lacrosse they could have won We have to stay out of the penalty box All told he Rams took 135 minutes in penalties and three players Glen Sherman Wade Knight and Jim Chisolm were tossed out of the Unless the team pays a fine which would enable the three to bypass the league ruling they must sit out one more game This bodes ill for the Rama as their next game Is against powerful Huntsvllle crew here at sday evening Four Orillla players were also given the toss one player for a head butting incident In one of the altercations This could result in a fivetoseven game suspension The first period had both teams basically concentrating on lacrosse and the Rams led at the end of so minutes The brawls of the second period allowed to leap in front and they were never caught For Orillla Cam Devine provided the big punch as he counted six times For the Rams Paul Wilson had three goals Bruce Cooksley and Ian Dull came up with two goal per formances while singles went to Steve Wilson Kevin Mar com Jim Chlsholm Bruce Green Glen Sherman and Bill Fox Georgetown native Andy picked up two assists in his debut with the Rams Game time this Thursday night when the Rams host Is at the Georgetown arena Halton Board Posting means that the pharmacist is obliged to publicly place in his store a large poster usually two feet by three feet size which list the 50 or 1 00 most common prescription drugs sold In recent years consumer pressure has been mounting to have this practice changed Last year the Consumers Association of Canada asked for an end to this ban claiming that prices should be publicly posted in pharmacies Andre minister or consumer and corporate affairs responded that he favored posting in the stores restricted to the generic name or brand name of a drug Its strength or dosage and its price
