been for IS years now and in the past seven yean has taught at least women how to book Mrs Lyons a member of the Ontario Hooking Guild and a member of the Georgetown Hooking Guild began teaching classes in her own home In She teaches the more elaborate aspects of hooking such as creative stitches and sculpturing Three of Mrs Lyons past students now specialise in various area of rug hooking and the same three will be teaching rug booking for one week at Trent University Mrs Lyons described her craft as the oldfashioned type of rug hooking like our grandmothers and great grandmothers did in pioneer only our techniques are slightly updated She further explained It not an expensive craft The basic costs are for a hoop and SO for a hook A beginner could moke a rug for It a not expensive if you don t want to make it expensive Mrs Lyons stated that If re cycled materials are used the cost can be reduced by half Mrs Lyons also teaches how to properly dye materials which is another moneysaver Mrs Lyons took Interest in the art and took a beginners course in a craft studio She continued her education developing her skills and shortly afterwards she began teaching classes In January 1988 Mrs Lyons taught a night course at the Georgetown District High School It was this laile of teaching which sparked her home instructions because there were no other courses offered for anyone who wished to tackle more complicated stitches It was difficult getting my classes started I was selling Avon products at the time and when I waa going from door to door I carried a piece of my
